Cougar, can I just check - from the other thread, but you quote it here:

[quote=Cougar ]You can create your own account on the box as a master a/c (and add the Gold sub to that if he's going to play online)

So if I put the gold sub on my account and have mini aracer as a family member he gets full access? Was going to put gold on his account (downloaded minecraft on his account in case there were any issues), but I guess that might be better.

Though I need to sort out the whole family account thing. Currently mini aracer's DOB is set so he is an adult as on the 360 it seemed that if I set up a child account for live it required you to add a credit card which wasn't needed for an adult account (somewhat infuriating as it appears the cc was some sort of age verification for an adult setting up a child account, but absolutely nothing to stop you lying as I did).

Well that seems to work better than on the 360. Have added mini-aracer2 (who never had a live account before) to my family and it happily added him without requiring a CC. So have now "corrected" the DOB for mini-aracer1 and fixed his content and privacy - just waiting for him to complain he can't do something now!

Yup, AFAIK your "home" Xbox then has a Gold account attached to it.

Different from the 360 where Gold applied to each individual user.

Have you heard of Steam? PC games service, so content is online/downloaded. They also sell hardware, controllers etc. and there's company's like Alienware (Dell) who make pre-built Steam Machines.

I built my own steam machine using some spare equipment and a 2nd hand gpu, however, one could be built for around £300. You'll find better functionality than an xbone / ps4, any weird hardware issues can be fixed as you would a normal PC without having some propiatory hardware.

No extra costs for online/multilayer gaming, better graphics and if you have you a NAS at home, you could connect your steam machine to it using a 10Gb link and enjoy seriously quick disk access.

Games are often cheaper too!

And using hashtags on a web forum, no less.

Man struggles to use Xbox One, so you suggest he builds a steam box? 😀

I moved away from PC gaming as I got sick of software updates, driver updates, hardware upgrades and OS that don't get fixed.

£300 might get you as a simple gaming machine but £200 or less gets you a current console.

Keyboard and mouse rules out PC gaming for alot of people too used to controllers. I know you can use xbox controller with some games but you die very quickly against those using keyboard and mouse.

Steam Controller, an alternative to keyboard/mouse. Though there's keyboard/mouse 'trays' which allow you to use those devices sat on the sofa.

I use Kodi as well as Netflix + MythTV which all runs on one bit of hardware.

Not sure why you've had to change hardware, sort out drivers and muck about with the OS / have issues with it. Hardware change could suggest a low-spec initial build.

Sure, it'll cost a little more to build but you end up with better graphics, no subscription costs for online / multiplayer gaming, cheaper games with online backup of game progress, no optical disc drives or media to worry about and you can build the system to produce very little noise too.

Of course, in saying all of this, if you have a TV and want to play a game every now and again, a console is a much simpler route to go down. However, if you want one box to fulfill numerous duties such as media server, PVR, games console, lounge-based Skype and goodness knows what else, then a PC -based games console can be amazing!

Just to add, in terms of stability, my system has never crashed, never experienced hardware failure or ran in any way abnormally. But, I use Supermicro boards, Xeon CPU's, ECC ram, Seasonic PSU's and Noctua coolers.
