[Closed] Royal Mail holding a country to ransom?!

It's the Daily Mail though, which probably means it's a made up statistic, or just downright lies.

Our Postie is brilliant - young guy in his early 20s who does his round in shorts whatever the weather - makes me feel like a right wimp when I pass him with the dogs wrapped in all manner of outdoor gear.

The problem with the royalmail is simple, those who are in charge are talentless, shortsighted and unable to grasp effective efficient management of resources.

We all look forward to seeing the stellar job you'll make of it when you're in charge!

Why am I doing this? Because I am at work and bored/unmotivated. And because my postie is great and Kaesae has a right royal mail chip on his shoulder!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8297025.stm

Quote from article "If you wish to get a letter collected that weighs 350 grams or less, the choice is reduced, as only 30 companies, including the Royal Mail, are licensed by regulator Postcomm to send it"

Kaesae why don't you use google to find an alternative (probably more expensive and less reliable) delivery company. 30 companies doesn't seem like amonopoly to me ๐Ÿ˜†

@konabunny

Are you suggesting that those people affected by this issue in the article and also the people who have sent them items, would choose to go through that experience if there was any other choice โ“

The royalmail are the only company that has access to the post offices, this gives them a monopoly on the services provided by the post office.

However I would suggest that since they are in breach of thier own terms and condition that this should not be the case and that any company that can prove it's competence should be allowed to offer it's serviced at post offices.

When this happens I will stop believing that the royalmail has a monopoly, until then you have one company (mono) and they have an unfair advantage in business and are the only ones that supply this commodity through the post offices (poly)

I can see the logic, after all opening up British Rail's monopoly to a multiplicity of providers has worked really well for the customer. They could even force Royal Mail to artificially inflate their prices so that the other companies can enter the market and make a decent profit for their shareholders using infrastructure they haven't paid for - same way as they did with Scottish Power.

We already covered that one. Just like DHL has a monopoly on the services available from DHL offices, and you can't buy a Big Mac at Burger King.

Though feel free to keep on pedalling your complete tosh on this thread - it does make the NY more entertaining.

Hahaha! about sums it up! modernisation!!!

As for you rararacer and the rest of you, if I don't have a clue about what's going on and the situation, then why is it that the article up there is saying the exact same thing โ“ all of you seem to have ignored / dismissed it ๐Ÿ˜€

Then again in the usual STW fashion, if it doesn't fit your argument, ignore it ๐Ÿ˜‰

Maybe you should have a read of the Wikipedia page dedicated to Royal Mail.

It states pretty clearly in the Timeline :

2006: Royal Mail loses its monopoly when the regulator,[30]Postcomm, opens up the Postal Market 3 years ahead of the rest of Europe.

You can chose to ignore that if you want though, if it doesn't fit your argument like ๐Ÿ™„

Well, if the article in question is the Daily Mail item, it's probably because the DM has a long history of wildly distorting facts and statistics to suit their own socially destructive agenda.

Which article is saying that you can send stuff via RM from a DHL office and buy a Big Mac in Burger King? Must have missed that one.

Still it keeps us all happy - back at work and seeing how much deeper can kaesae dig.

In summary

- There is no monopoly in postal services in the UK, there at 30 licensed companies just for letters!
- The Post Office and Royal Mail are the same organisation. Hence the PO only sells RM deliveries. Where I live I can send via DHL from staples or FedEx from WHSmiths
- Royal Mail is NOT perfect and still manages to fail to meet everyones expectations.

Royal Mail is NOT perfect and still manages to fail to meet everyones expectations.

...but is generally cheaper and better than the alternatives, hence presumably why some people keep using them, no matter how much they might complain.

Yes, that's precisely what I am suggesting. There are other choices (lots of them, in fact!) to using the Royal Mail. Most people don't use them because they're more expensive and less convenient.

I think you will find that the monopoly point that the STW munters are so determined to cling onto is a minor one and only worth 0.25 of a point at most.

The issues that are important are that the royalmail suck and are ripping people off!

As for the service being better than other companies, parcelfarce and standard parcels, would rather use several other companies than those.

They have a massive network of facilities, which gives them a massive advantage and still manage to suck!

Show me prices for other companies that are close to royalmail for letters or packages from 1gram to 500grams.

If you can I will admit that I am wrong ๐Ÿ˜€

Eh? "Unless you can show me that other companies are better than Royal Mail, this proves the Royal Mail is the worst?"
