More recently there was Afterlife which is the true (excuse me) spiritual successor to the original and is just glorious in every way possible.
Guessing it's worth a watch then? Have been holding off unless it disappoints me as much as 2016 (although I agree with you as regards the Holtzmann character - only thing remotely close to the originals in terms of tone and enjoyment).
Watched Renegades on Amazon last night.
It was so bad I wondered if it was dubbed.
Everything about it is awful - so awful that I concluded it was made bad on purpose.

No, just that Lucy was the point at which Besson went full Hollywood nonsense and made his most successful film outside of France; the biggest grossing French film of all time. My own Besson favourites are Subway and Le Grand Bleu, both have plausibility, excellent scripts and a lack of explosions/effects that failed to fill theatres outside of France. Lucy which was the biggest grossing French film outside France only just makes the top 100 grossing films in France at 100th whereas Le Grand Bleu is 15th. 9 million went to see Le grand Bleu in France and just 900 000 in the US.
I'm not a very good cinema goer. To enjoy a film I need it to be coherent and plausible within the context of the fictional world presented. You'll note that my own worst films include Star Wars because the longer I watched the more time I spent thinking "this is nonsense, this world doesn't add up" - I walked out shaking my head. You might say that the Fifth Element world was equally ridiculous, maybe, but it was also very funny, I was entertained and watched to the end.

Trouble is, the book section you describe about Mr Corleone and his lady friend's physical features pops into my head whenever I watch that bit of the movie, even though I've not picked up the book for 30 years.
Say what you will about Snyder, the intro to The Watchmen is the best intro to a film EVER. AND it’s one of those few films that’s actually better than the books that it’s based on without pissing all over the original content.
It's almost a polished shot for shot remake of the comic & has no soul & completely misses the point with the changed ending. The recent HBO series set in the same universe was a much better adaptation in terms of soul & spirit of the comic.

I think you'd be hard-pressed to claim that Lucy is a "French movie", apart from a French director, and finance neither of leads are French, it's not in French, or about France, or primarily set in France, yes there are scenes in Paris, but there are also scenes in Taipei and that doesn't make it a Taiwanese film either.

I recognised places outside of Paris as well, some quite well known. ; Sure they filmed scenes all over the globe but the vast majority of the footage was filmed on location in France or in French studios.
I watched it in French, other languages are possible: English, Mandarin, German, Italian, Spanish, Korean. So we have French finance, French director, French studio, mainly French locations and some admittedly shitty acting by foreigners needed to sell to the Americans. And you claim it ain't French. On your criteria there aren't many (if any) British Bond films. 😉 But yeah, it has that crappy Hollywood feel which is why it was a box office hit in spite of being a French film.
And it wasn't a film I want to sit through again, Smogmonster isn't wrong. 🙂

Resurrecting the thread just to say thanks to @Cougar. Watched Afterlife tonight and thought it was great. Reminded me a fair bit of Super8 which is a good thing.
Fun, lots of fan service and a big heart. As I'd avoided it previously, even the 'surprise' at the end of the third act worked for me. Plus bonus points for possibly annoying the anti-woke brigade with a wonderful ASD lead character (and even more bonus points for not virtue signalling that fact at all).

How dare anyone mention The Room, it's one of my all time favourites. I went to a screening with Wiseau and Greg Sistero, got the selfie, Tommy and Greg did a Q&A, audience howled with laughter, shouted and screamed the entire film, threw plastic spoons at the screen on cue, pure entertainment.
Something seems to have gone very wrong with the last 10 years of film output though. Injecting "Progressive" political messages into scripts, castings etc doesn't make for good movies.
I'm sure its been mentioned on the thread already but Top Gun Maverick is truly awful
Watched it last night - what a waste of an opportunity. Rubbish script, rubbish plot, rubbish acting, rubbish characters......even the air combat scenes were pretty meh. The cinematography was awful too - tried to go for a homage to the original but completely missed the boat
I know the original wasn't Shakespeare but it at least it hung together, was well filmed and had a bit of humour and jeopardy

Bringing things bang up to date, The Bricklayer was hopeless. Poor script, hopeless and misogynistic characters (especially the star). An action flick by numbers!

No, I'd disagree, the Dial of Destiny wasn't great (are you expect much though) but it was a final return to form for the character, and nothing like a terrible as the crystal skull dross.
+1 for GB afterlife being pretty damned good (I enjoyed Rudd's enthusiasm), I haven't even bothered with that remake, why would you spoil a great/fun film like that (also see Taxi for the same shocking activity)

PPS: Rebel Moon, it was pretty but total crap, has no one ever seen "Battle for the stars" (or any of the other seven samurais remakes). Snyder was rumoured to be looking at Rogue trooper pre-covid, lets hope he forgot about it
Sorry if it's been mentioned before in this thread, but I watched 'Armageddon' on TV on Saturday night. Worst film I've seen for a long time. Utter garbage. So bad it was funny.

I'm the same, I think about films too much while I'm watching them. This is the reason I gave up on A Quiet Place when I tried watching it last week - I was losing patience with the utter stupidity of everything about this film, but the final straw was when Emily Blunt was hanging her washing on the line and pegged up a perfectly ironed, box-fresh tea-towel. A year and a half after a massive apocalypse and her tea-towels are in a better condition than mine!
Anyway, I always wonder whether the problem with Star Wars is that the 'rebels' are in fact the baddies and we are supporting the wrong side. The Star Wars world always seems well-functioning and affluent until the rebels turn up, and they really love a good Fascist parade... 😀

Ghostbusters 2016 wasn't by any measure a great film. But I think the kicking it received wasn't wholly deserved. There were plenty who had already made up their mind - as above - before they'd watched it. Melissa McCarthy is truly dreadful, she's irritating as all hell in every scene she's in. Chris Hemsworth is good but it's a one-trick joke stretched waaaaay too thin. But it has its merits, there are some cute Easter Eggs and as I've said before it's worth the price of entry for Kate McKinnon.

Are we talking about the Ghostbusters with the kids? If so, I went into that with really, REALLY low expectations and was really pleasantly surprised. It was not a bad film and dealt with a dead lead actor from the originals in a good way.

I realised while scrolling through Netflix that it's quite possible that no one has yet discovered the true worst film ever.
With every week that goes past the number of low budget, made for streaming films seems to increase. Along with stuff dredged up from the darker recesses of the low royalty back catalogues.
The even worse bit is you start watching something and then give up on it 3 minutes later because it's a load of festering yak vomit and then a week later...

Not a moan about Netflix as there's some really good stuff out there too but just one bad five minutes of watching the wrong thing and you're at risk of being sucked into a spiral of awfulness.
