[Closed] Will they thank me in the long run?
Kids Christmas is new bikes... they are 10. First 26ers.
At the moment I have lots of bits. I'm thinking that I'll build them with them, they have helped me build bikes before and do bits of maintenance but these will be theirs.
Am I just setting myself up for a painful few days of impatient kids without their new bikes and should just get on it myself or is this one of those life experiences they will thank me for in the long run.
What do the STW collective think?
A
Definitely build with your kids. Investing time into something is far better than the usual instant gratification associated with getting stuff at Christmas.
Yeah, build with the kids, I enjoyed teaching my dad how to use a spanner ๐
yeah I'm seeing it as transition from lego and meccano ๐
...they'll need it in the future when all the bike shops are closed down and bikes are only available on-line or we are all riding e-bikes if the mags and advertisers have their way ๐
Definitely do it - did it for my 13 year old last Christmas, picked up an Inbred frame in the sale, we put on a load of bits off my old build, we totally fubarred the BB somehow and had to get the threads redone by the LBS, we got it all done bar shortening and bleeding the hoses as that is something I've not got round to doing myself yet, and he appeared as grateful as a 13 year old ever will.
He has told his Nan - my mum - that he enjoyed spending time in the garage pottering on it with me, so a valuable thing to have done, even if we don't ride as often as I'd like to with him.
He has also since learnt the valuable life lesson that leaving searches running on eBay sometimes throws up unexpectedly cheap upgrades that the women in the house need know nothing about...... 8)
