It is a derogitory term?

Yet it seems quite acceptable to label someone a Karen.

She should speak to the manager about it.

What's wrong with implying a little entitlemenr? At least it doesn't mean toilet or user of prostitutes.

Had to google this. Seems like dickhead would suffice. Maybe there was an American lady called Karen who was a weapons grade bellend and the term stuck. Basically blame Karen

I have no idea of why this is wrong. I'm sure if it is there are a lot more names used on here that would have to be added to the list.

As a perjorative term I think it originated in the US where "Karen" is a more "posh" name than it is here. Signifying a pushy, entitled often bigoted middle class woman. I don't think it's survived its transatlantic journey too well as it is a more generic classless name here. One of the few examples of the US being more class conscious than the UK instead of the more usual reverse situation.

Anyway, people in glass houses, Louise.

I'm 44 (and well cool) and have never heard any one get called 'a Karen'.

Apart from the 2 people I know called Karen.

I couldn't really care less where it came from, but the OP has got to be the wettest attempt at being PC I've seen in a long time - and I've seen some proper drivel.

One problem with your thesis. It’s nothing to do with class.

I guess the name Karen might have different connotations in the US but the concept is of an overly-entitled middle-aged, usually white, woman.

I can see the humour, and it’s picking fun of entitlement, which is all great, but it’s very sexist IMHO.

It's 2020. If someone's offended by it then really it should be banned.

Thesis? 😄 5 mins Googling more like. Like a lot of memes it seems there are a dozen or more definitons (many including "middle class") and no one can agree exactly where and when it started. Except you perhaps? What is your thesis?

I’m aware of the whole Karen thing - it would be difficult not to be if you spend any time on Twitter. I was hoping there’d be a ground zero Karen somewhere, but it seems not. Anybody know?

Far too much of a deep dive into it!

I have no problem with it. People like to give an individual face to certain personality tropes and certain names are stereotyped to fit.

Tarquin = generic public school posh young man
Norman = a bore off
Dave = generic bloke in the street
Sharon = "essex" girl

Etc, etc.

No, it really shouldn't. Mildly offending someone isn't a crime. Stop trying to water everything down to the point where we won't even be able to do comedy soon.

"Karen' isn't a racist term, it's not mysoginistic, it's not homophobic, it's just a bloody term to describe a type of person. So what if some melt gets offended by it?

It's the thin edge of the wedge.

Do the MNPR lot still refer to Binners as a bit of a Susan?

From my limited experience of Karens (two) they were a bit wiffy at primary school.

Can't imagine every being in the sack with someone call Karen.

Louise on the other hand......It might be dancing with the devil liable to bite your head off but it's going to be fun whilst it lasts.

I had to ask hubby what a Karen was. His reply - "we're living next door to one".
No further explanation needed. Except she's not middle class, just thinks she is.

The actual Karen I know, is one of the loveliest people you could possibly meet.

I wasn’t being entirely serious. Sadly I’ve spent enough time on social to understand it’s an over entitled person who will demand to see the person in charge for a minion fault.

Does a 'Karen' have to be female?
