I use it.

a good way to keep in contact with scattered friends - a good way to pool photos of trips with the friends, I find it useful. Its also useful for various common interest groups

You can set up your privacy as tight or slack as you want and you don't have to accept friend requests from tossers you don't know - I don't.

I have found some old friends I had lost contact with thru facebook

Exactly this, we even have an invite only group for a mid week ride.

Like TJ says it's what you make it.

I think if your selective about your FB friends it's very useful. I don't accept or add randoms. Only people who I want to share my stuff with. I cull regularly too as the list slowly builds up. Nothing private there for me just holiday and biking snaps. Don't know why so many have such a problem with it.

Sometimes I wonder about the FB lurkers. They seem to know everything about you so check often enough but never contribute anything. Why bother then?

Had an account for a few years. Use it to keep in touch with people in other parts of the country/ other countries. Have a policy of having no friends or relatives local to me on it. If they want to talk to me, they know where my door is and what my phone numbers are.

Bullying is huge on there and as mentioned in a different thread, it made me sick to the stomach to find that some poor family discovered their only son had died on it. It is evil, intrusive, and should be banned.

Taken in that context, we should then ban:
the internet
school
workplace.

No; facebook, however, seems to bring out the worst in people.

I just don't get this hogwash about keeping in touch. How many mediums do we needs?

Email, snail mail, landlines, mobile phones. Or here's a novelty - why not arrange to visit or go for a beer, and have a really nice long chat. You know, catch up with your friends - have a conversation.

I don't get twitter either. Really, does every idea that springs into folks' minds need to be made available for everyone else to see? YOU'RE NOT THAT INTERESTING!!! If you think you are YOU'RE ESPECIALLY DULL

But I've got 437 of them. It's alright for someone like you who only has three or four. ๐Ÿ˜›

You don't consider us to be friends then? ๐Ÿ™

I have a Facebook account, never really used it for anything other than poking fun at my sisters and using it to save interwebs links I liked ... then my wife decided to close her FB account and piggy-back on (i.e. take over) mine ...

So now, it's full of endless drivel from all her friends, most of whom seem to spend the entirety of their lives posting up pictures and LookatmeTube videos they've come across ...

Nothing original or interesting to say for themselves, just copy-&-pasting "stuff I found online" ... I mean, what's the point, really? ... then all their sycophantic friends all 'like' it, thus justifying their post and making them feel all warm and fuzzy ...

FB and Twitter are both just devastating belt-fed dispensers of pure bollox (to steal a phrase from Cpt Slow)

Sounds a bit like an Internet forum I use from time to time.

I have facebook.

I have "family", "friends" "colleagues" groups etc. My brother might be chuffed to see a pic of my little boy playing with his Bday present but it might not interest others so you can choose who you share with. (if you remember to do it) You can set your default shares

I also started a group called "cotswold singletrack" and have met a couple of chaps off the back of it

If one of my facebook "friends" gets annoying, they get blocked and moved to the "limited profile" friend group . (they dont get to make another friend request then) Simples.

Didn't we do this last week?

Got one (obviously) ๐Ÿ˜† wouldn't be without it, chat with people, see online news/articles I wouldn't normally see, or have to look for, band updates (tours gigs, whatever) adverts from shops/sites I want to see, links to all sorts of stuff, and of course all my friends

And yes gossip to, and to many "OMG LOL", as well, but so what? where else would I have seen an ex schoolmate on gonewild... hahaha slut.

I have facebook

What, all of it?

You must be worth millions ...

What is this Facebook you speak of?

It's a tool for stalking people, and tracking down people you lost touch with years ago (who never kept in touch with you for a reason)

In the real world, I have riding buddies that perceive STW users in the same way that some STW users perceive Facebook users.

I've got a facebook account which I use occasionally to keep up with distant family members and friends. Facebook is so jam-packed with shite that it's difficult to get to the worthwhile stuff though.

In some cases I just stop viewing the posts of some folks (e.g. the ones that post on facebook everytime they go for a coffee or have a shit) and definitely stop all the game updates. Unfortunately some of the worst offenders for re-posting crap and my mum and other close family members and I'm too polite to hide their updates!

I have account, only 100 or so friends and some are people I never really see but it's nice to know what they are up to and sometimes paths cross. It's not the evil thing people think it is and I post quite a bit about hobbies and stuff because I share with other people with the same hobby (similar to here!). I share lots of photos, it doesn't force people to look but they can if they want to. I've hidden quite a few people because I'm just not that interested in them, including some very close friends because as someone said, if they are that close you know this stuff first hand

It's too much information and takes some of the fun out of life. I don't want to know everyone who will be at the party. I'm more likely to go "Oh, he's a bit of a dick, it's going to be a bad party" instead of just turning up and seeing what happens.

When I see someone who I haven't seen in ages but aren't friends with them enough to meet up, I want to be surprised. I don't want to know ahead that they're coming to the city. I just prefer the surprise, it makes life a little bit better.

I don't want to passively know what everyone has been up to. I want to ask them and have a conversation about it. Even then, too many conversations go:
"I went to Spain"
-"Yeah, I saw on Facebook."
"They had a lovely donkey in the garden"
-"Yeah, you took a photo and put it on Facebook"
That's boring. You're just talking about Facebook.

I don't want that potential new friend to satisfy their curiosity about me by looking at my Facebook page and never talking to me again, instead of inviting me out and getting to know me. And these days, even if they do invite me out, instead of a personal invitation to an event, I get an invite along with 326 other friends / childhood friends / promoters / donkeys / their mum. I call this the 'gathering vs party facebook pitfall' - it's not cool turning up with 'da hoes' to a Star Wars viewing.

I've not got one as I'd set one up only to find out the ex-wife and her family were snooping on me, Shane really that she's that sad, she was bloked but then her family started snooping.
