To the original question. I'd say the minority who pierce their nipples do it for themselves whereas the majority do it to try and be different and project a 'racey' personality.

Sputnik. Ok as I sit here in college now I cant feel it ( the nip piercing) never caught it on anything either. When it's played with or whatever then it feels pretty ****ing good if I'm being honest. Why did I have it done? Complicated, I used to be a pretty straight laced kinda girl ( think ballet gymnastics that sort of thing) a few years ago I realised that wasn't me at all. I got a few piercings and it snowballed from there. The nip was sort of a dare.

Based on an extensive sample of errr....1 girl with pierced nips, I believe that to be correct.
