At least 50% of the cars in Bourg d'oisans must be Dutch.
What's the big attraction?

Something to do with the fact a Dutch Priest was at the Chapel up there when the tour 1st went up it in the 50's.
That and the fact Peter Winnen won 2 stages there, Stephen Rooks and Gert theunisse also won on the Alpe, plus I think the Dutch like the irony of Holland being so flat but their riders have done so well on the Alpe.

the dutch have a long tradition of roadie-ing and they like a beer or two

alpe d'huez involves a long day of standing in the sun getting pissed, then a bike race to interfere with

Because Dutch riders have won there 8 times and the Dutch priest at the church on Dutch corner.

Joop Zoetemelk twice.

Hennie Kuiper twice.

Peter Winnen twice.

Steven Rooks once.

Gert-Jan Theunisse one.

They also love road riding in general.

Was there a couple of weeks ago, but not anymore unfortunately.

The dutch love hanging out with the dutch....

Winterberg (bike park venue) is just the same.

I was there a week ago, and I also wondered why there are so many Dutch people there; the majority of cars in the campsite that I stayed in (right at the foot of Alpe d'Huez) had NL plates. Most of them were non-cyclists too.

I understand about the 'Dutch Corner' tradition when the Tour is on, but why do they go there on holiday?

Each summer the last person out of the Netherlands turns off the lights and locks up.

It's not just the alp, they're everywhere.

The Dutch tend to go on holidays en-masse, called the builders holiday, it was a few weeks ago and lasts a fortnight. I made the mistake of having a holiday at the same time and down the Rhein-Mosel valleys, every car was Dutch, the campsite we stopped at was full of cloggies. Wouldn't mind, but I live in the Nederlands and it would have been nice to get away from them for a while!
