The default four at the bottom (Phone/Mail/Safari/iPod) aren't editable though and stay on all pages.

Yeah they are: I have Mail, Phone, Opera and Messages down there.

Ohh, so they are. ๐Ÿ™‚

I have just spent two minutes arranging all my Apps onto their own homepages - Sports/Games etc.

The new OS lets you just bung them into Folders.

It's revolutionary I tell you ๐Ÿ™‚

Last time I used the iPhone, all you could have on your home screen was a load of icons to launch apps. So you actually have to open apps rather than the info just being there on the screen. Perhaps Apple have changed this though as it seems a bit useless

Not quite sure what you mean, but as it is something I have never used, it is something I don't miss - I find it very quick and easy to get what I need on my iPhone.

Eh? What sort of logic is that? I'll bet you've got a PC running Microsoft software though, just to avoid that massive company called Apple!

Put brain into gear before opening mouth, eh?

well now that apple is larger(by corporate worth) than microsoft thats fair enough

not very clued up yourself?

stuartm555: yep - there are no widgets on the (non-jailbroken) iPhone as yet. Not sure if Apple are planning to allow them or not.

The only real status information like that on the iPhone is "Badges" on the icons (which just let icons display a little number for the number of unread messages, new game challenges, whatever) and "Push Notifications" (where a message pops up on screen to tell you something: like "your eBay auction is about to end").

Observation - Desire owners use logic and reasoning. Iphone owners get all defensive and narky. A symptom of the Apple brainwashing they have been subjected too? ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

i must admit a few posts slagging off the iphone and even comparing apple to maccyDs or tesco and they get very riled
talk about re-enforcing the stereotype of 'apple fanboys' being smug, sarcy and condescending!

Put brain into gear before opening mouth, eh?

Shhh ... he was feeling all superior.

LOL - yes - keep Artists A-M on one iPhone and N-Z on another. People doing that will make a big contribution to Apple's cashflow!

Apart from the y'know, the 32GB iPhone.

Isn't battery life also dependent on your signal quality (if you are making calls/txt/surfing/downloading)? If you have poor signal connection then surely the phone has to use more power to open and maintain a connection?

Yeah signal does have an impact. Particularly if it is trying to maintain a 3G connection when you are just in and out of a 3G reception area.

One thing I don't think anyone's mentioned yet: after 12 - 18 months the new iPhone will be worth quite a bit more than the Desire 2nd hand. I plan on 12 months of iPhone from Tesco, then selling it and switching to whatever the latest/greatest android is. IMO android is still a bit rough round the edges, in another year it will probably be untouchable.

Funny thing though, how grown adults can still get all defensive about stuff like this. I don't "hate" Apple, it's just not for me. I'd recommend an iPhone or a Mac in a heartbeat to the right audience, same with Windows, Linux etc. It's not a one-size-fits-all question.

The ZX Spectrum was better than the Commodore 64 though.

Yeah, the Amstrad was pretty good. Did you have both games for it as well?

I'm surprised how important smooth mobile phone menu ergonomics are to everyone anyway nowdays. ๐Ÿ˜•

The vast majority of the time I'm either at work or home, both of which have a PC set up for all my browsing needs, proper keyboard/big monitor. When I'm in neither of these two places I'm probably out on my bike, at which point I don't really care about email.

Still, regardless of this, any decent smartphone from the last 5 years with Symbian/Winmo can happily handle turn by turn navigation, email, tethering, RSS feeds etc. All in compact cases, with much better cameras (which are occationally hand on a bike).

Do people have a second phone they chuck in their bags when they go biking just out of curiosity?

PS I'm the target audience, IT tech, middle aged, programmer too. I'm just not paid enough for gizmos, I'm stuck on a long contract and I'm bitter I think.

Think I've said before, but I have a nice PC at home with a big ass 1920x1080 IPS monitor, comfy operator's chair, ergonomic mouse, all that good stuff. I also have a nice little netbook, that is light, has a great battery and an almost full size keyboard.

I still do most (>80%) of my browsing on the iPhone (and would probably do likewise on an HTC).

I'm thinking of getting one of these.

How do people find the network coverage is when away in the sort of places we go biking? North Wales, the Lakes, rural Scotland etc?

I only really want it for email, browsing forums like this site and memory map. Oh and making calls!

ed34: if you're still reading all this rubbish, the choice is academic 'cos Memory Map does not run on Android (iPhone's or Windows Mobile only, I'm afraid)

Patchy, and operator-dependent. I've been out when we've had O2 at full strength but Orange completely dead, and vice versa. I don't think any one of the big providers is better than the others, but they do tend to differ when you get out in the sticks.

Thinking about it, the way to go might be to get a spare PAYG SIM on a different network to improve your options in emergencies (though doesn't 999 work cross-network?)
