I am making a real effort to stay within speed limits, 29 in a 30, 49 in a 50 and so but why do people get so cross, i mean really angry, driving really close , even had a woman over take me in a 30 zone whilst I was doing 29...

Why...

Speeding isn’t real crime, and stopping others from getting to exactly where they want to get to right now is bad.

Because they are ****ing bellends. I get overtaken in 30mph areas most days. Yesterday it was a motorcyclist who seemed to think that 80mph was appropriate.

Because most people are dicks.

Self entitled selfish dicks tend to be impatient

Have had the same happen to me a lot recently, I can’t offer any explanation but it’s another indication of the rapid decline in driving standards

No police so they are very unlikely to get caught and they know it

They have to get home so they can argue with people on the internet.

If they drive too close then I slow down more. Most get the message eventually.

Area of the country will affect this too, my van struggles to break the speed limit at the best of times, so they just have to wait. Although it’s usually me stuck behind a tourist doing 25mph in a 60 looking a the Cornish countryside...

I honestly think a large number of drivers don't actually know how fast they are going or what the speed limit is. They just get cross when you are in their way.

Because people are dicks! I've spent the last few days driving around Wales quite a few miles actually, mostly snowdonia, some people will sit permanently at 43 mph in every zone, so today in my big nasty white van I've overtaken people, yes in the rain, and also shook my head at others going like a **** in 30's coming towards me and going the same way. I consider myself a driving god and drive very defensively, I've even started to flick the mirrors in this week on Welsh narrow roads as certain cars approach because I know it's going to be close!

It's just life, there's angry people everywhere.

Just ignore them and carry on.

Likewise the ones that flash and swear at you when you legally and safely overtake them.

(Although if you're driving at 29 on your Speedo you're likely only doing 26ish)

Speedo fair point but not taking the chance of getting a speeding ticket..... Even so it is not 15 in a 30 it is a reasonable speed in law.

I can’t stand morons that speed in 30mph zones. I’m normally coming home from work at about half eight in the morning and pass through a village where people are walking young children to the pre-school along the pavement and always stick to 30, yet I normally have some bottom of the range new German car within him an inch of my bumper (normally with their fog lights on) or they overtake without any thought for the pedestrians safety.

I also can’t stand the ‘average speed’ driver that sticks to 45 whether in a 60 or 30 zone.

To OP. Nothing wrong with staying under the speed limit and absolutely no need for others to get annoyed by it. Driving dangerously (tailgating or the person that drove behind me for 10mins this week texting whilst holding their phone on the steering wheel) is annoying but driving below the speed limit - no it’s not annoying and shouldn’t be.

50mph limit on motorways through road works only applies to lane one apparently

Oh this has has caused me so much aggro from drivers, but it’s a tactic I also use.

It would probably help if speedo's all actually showed the correct speed.

try drivng in south london latish evening, sydenham hill is a 20mph limit, i get overtaken 75% of the time. if they put a camera in the box half way up they will make a lot...maybe enough to patch some pot holes

I ride a motorbike and I dislike - very much - tailgaters. Even when I was learning on my 125 I've made this very clear to cars following too close.

But to answer the OP - gawd knows. There are plenty of 20/30 limits near me, but sticking to those limits just seems like asking for trouble. I really do despair at times.

@simonloco

I have to say holidaymaker driving it probably where I start to get annoyed.... speeding up your arse through a 30 get to the first corner and they've vanished! Coming on holiday to Cornwall and the like must cost them a fortune in brake pads. At least they were behind me....
Four Lane and Leedstown routes to Helston have been pretty bad since the holiday season started.

I spend most of my day driving and its amazing how poor commuters are at maintaning a speed. I'll sit at 70 in lane 1, car will catch up, get along side then stay there until a truck appears, boxing me in. Then if its a duel lane, whilst overtaking the truck their speed will drop to 60ish as they inch past.
See also 40 in a NSL then 40 through a 30/20 limit because it feels comfortable.

Not really since they all show basically the same speed anyway, and if you act all clever clogs and go by your GPS you'll just be outpacing anyone who is going by their speedo. Which is basically no-one anyway so whatever.

My favourite was on the A1M near Peterborough which is 4 lanes IIRC on a Sunday. I'm in lane 2 at 70 with cruise control on, I'm not in lane 1 as I don't want to keep weaving in and out of the lorrys in that lane. A chap in a Volvo tailgates me flashing his lights, there's another 2 fricking lanes to overtake, which he eventually does then off into the distance he goes. I'm far from a perfect driver but that one left me scratching my head.

But they don't. Granted at lower speeds it makes little difference and I in no way condone being a dick behind the wheel or getting arsey about speed but I've driven a few Toyotas that indicate 70 at an actual 63, Fords tend to be 67-68, Vauxhall around the same. My eighties car actually indicates pretty much bang on gps speed.

Depends what you drive, innit? I’ve always liked slow plodding diesels - other drivers might get irate, but not much pushes a Mercedes 608D around. (apart from the wind)

I remember getting overtaken whilst running 30 just as we approached an NSL sign on the way out of a 30 zone by a car that then ran at 43mph until we turned off about eight miles later. Just... christ on a bike.

IME it depends what vehicle you're in. Doing 30mph in a 30 in my old van and not much tail gaiting. The same speed when I borrowed my mum's Aygo and folk were much more aggressive and attempting overtakes. There's a bit of a willy measuring element to it. Showing the "inferior" person what your rep mobile can do,

It's bad when someone does 40 in a 60, and you cant get into top gear, or pass.
Why should you be held to ransom? There are car parks for these people. the law doesnt allow one to set up such road blocks. They should have to pay for your extra petrol ,time, costs etc. The public road is not a holiday resort. Its there for a reason
So I guess when youre abiding by the limit, where it's obviously safe for any driver to go faster, people may consider that one should be able to use one's own judgement/intelligence to decide the maximum safe speed for the conditions

I was driving along a road near my house yesterday, the road is a mix of 30 and 40 limits. Most people will be doing 40+ along there it's quite an "easy" road to just drift along at that sort of speed. Being a local road, the majority of drivers on it seem to know it reasonably well and basically they *expect* to do 40+ all the way along there.

Anyway, yesterday I was about 3rd or 4th car in line from someone who was actually for once obeying the speed limit. This was fine, I held back from the car in front, could clearly see around the vehicles. The car behind the not-speeding one was 6inches from its bumper. The car behind me was exactly the same and I could see the woman getting irate - even though the road layout meant she could clearly see the line of cars. There's nowhere to pass along there and it's a bus route too so you often end up behind a bus that's even slower. I just can't see the point in getting worked up about it.

Why exactly? You’ll get to your destination a couple of minutes later than you originally would. Held to ransom is a very dramatic way of putting it. Just chill out.

It’s okay saying people should use their own judgement/intelligence, but that’s where a lot of drivers fall down. They’re ****ing idiots hence the need for posted limits in the first place.

And you’ll probably use less fuel at 40 than 60, so perhaps you should thank the slowcoaches?

Apart from the fact that this post has nothing to do with the situation in the OP..

It’s bad when someone does 40 in a 60, and you cant get into top gear, or pass.

The law absolutely does permit this. There is a minimum speed established on motorways, but not the roads in general.

So long as they slow down for the 30 limit when they find one, folk can drive at 40 everywhere else if they want.
