[#1851134]

A mate lent me his old Acer, but it's a no go.
Been looking at £50 ones on line, but am a bit 'in the dark'. Anybody got a basic model that does a reasonable job? Can you hire good quality ones?
Looking for 3000+ dpi/ 5meg+ sensor and compatible with windows7.

The cheap ones are seriously rubbish, the good ones are very good but very expensive. It also takes ages!

There are companies who will do it for you which might be another option.

Yeah, thought of sending off, but Negatives are hard to choose and I've got loads.

We have a Veho scanner, which does three slides or five negatives per load of the tray and the results are pretty good - always going to depend on the quality of the original, of course. It cost us £99 and was well worth it.

Ditto, Veho here too. It's "ok", does the job but wouldn't set the world alight.

If you've only got a few negs to scan I'm happy to do them for you, if there's loads then your best bet might be to buy one and then ebay when done - resell value was quite high last time I looked.

Buy and resell could be the way, I want quite a high dpi/res as some of the pics were taken by a FRGS Photographer, so are worth spending some time over.
Obviously, I'm hoping to do it all DIY in my spare time,

I've got an Epsom flatbed that takes negs, it's good if you don't mind playing "hunt the dust"

Slugwash has a 4000+ canon by chance to lend, so will give that a go first.

Cheers all

have I really got the wrong end of the stick in saying, use a good quality scanner and then 'invert' the raw/jpeg in photoshop to set it to a positive image?

The pornographic ones are in colour and the 'arty' erotic ones are in black & white 😉

So what's the best way to chew through a few hundred old snaps then? Could take forever with a flatbed scnaner.

That's why I'm trying to find a dedicated scanner, you need it for the quality really. I have a thou or two to look through.

How about getting a camera shop to print them then scanning the prints?

To scan slides you need to light them from above, most scanners light things from below. You also find that even with a decent scanner on a high setting the scan of a slide or negative is so small that it comes out really badly.

Bit more complicated than that - ever noticed the orangey colour of film? That's due to the way the light is filtered in between layers - you have to perform a colour correction appropriate to the film. Slide film is different, obviously.

These guys did a good job of my holiday films
