you never seen a Doctor or Nurse smoke Hora

I've got mates who are doctors. Smoking? It doesn't really figure on the radar when compared to their massive alcohol/class A intake

I kind of smoke have not for 3 days, but will probably have some at the weekend. Annoying thing for me is if I have some after the weekend I'll smoke them during the week. I'd be happy being a weekend smoker but the bastard nicotine is to powerful.

Does anyone know, the gum is available in 2mg where as marlboro light are 5mg. So if I used gum would I not become more addicted?

On the Hora/fitness issue: I'd just like to point out that my nicotine, beer and pie- addled body ALWAYS carries me to the top of climbs a lot quicker than the svelte, my-body-is-a-temple form of the Enigma himself 😀

Can someone tell me what the difference is between fags bought over the counter & the peasant fags that you make yourself ?

Apologies for the bone question, but i've never smoked a fag in my life.

D.

Counter fags - filter in and generally dearer - some claim it is mixed with sulphur as it will burn all the way down once lit
Roll up are blends of the tobacco plant - it may refer to a reefer /spliff though if a long roll or my personal favourite of after dinner jazz cigarette.
they taste different if you smoke as well but as anon smoker both would make you cough I suspect the roll ups have more tar

'straights' or 'talior mades' have chemicals in so that they burn evenly and a filter that doesnt degrade particularly well ~ £6 for 20

'rollies' are simply tobacco wrapped in paper, although some people buy filters to put in themselves. ~ £6 for 25g (40ish - depends how you roll)

funny smelling rollies are significantly more expensive.

pipe tobacco is different again - i have no experience of that tho'

all can vary in strength, flavor etc

Yoshimi. Ah we move in different circles I see. I'm just going to don my Rab Everest-rated jacket and head down to the organic cafe to discuss new Camper shoes with the other new-wave types

I suppose it's time I involved myself in this thread.

Some information, reflecting on posts thus far:

The difference between hand-rolled tobacco and tailor-made fags is insignificant (in terms of health and addictive qualities). Both are heavily treated with a large number of chemicals to increase the addictive action, thus making tobacco companies more money. Hand-rolled is certainly not a safer option.

Taxation from tobacco sales has not equalled it's cost on our society since 2003. It cost the UK ~£3.5 Billion in 2009.

Is the gum more addictive than fags? No, but people do occasionally become addicted (although very rarely). Smoking delivers a large bolus of tobacco at a very fast rate. This is one of the reasons fags are so addictive. Tobacco companies treat their products specifically to speed this process up.

It should be pointed out that Nicotine, in the doses people receive through smoking or NRT use, is mostly harmless. It's all the other crap in tobacco smoke that does the damage.

If your GP tells you that 5-a-day isn't bad, he/she is misinformed. 1-a-day will, on average, double your risk of CHD.

Healthcare professionals smoking doesn't validate it. My subjective opinion on this is that it simply highlights the power of smoking addiction on people, despite how well-informed they are of the consequences.

All kinds of people will tell you how to stop smoking. I'll always state that smoking is an individual action. The basics of physiology are the same, but the psychological complexities differ for everybody. There's no better or worse method, nor any better or worse type of pharmacotherapy. It's all about what's right for that individual.

I'd certainly agree that people won't stop for good until they really want to, and adverts banging on about COPD/CHD/cancer won't really make too much difference until it has a personal influence on that individual (e.g. Grandad has a stroke). Personally, I feel a lot of the messages about smoking cessation that the DH deliver are wrong. Instead of trying to make people feel bad about smoking, I'd prefer to let people feel good about considering stopping smoking.

That'll do.

131.5 hrs and counting!

Hora - and other people that've quit... does your vehement disgust for all things smoking actually show that you still really want to smoke, and that you keep telling yourself with almost religious zealous that it's horrible to stop yourself having a cheeky drag? Go on you know you want to...

I'm afraid Hora is in denial about rather a lot of things. Smoking is the least of his worries on this score

I don't feel disgust at all. I enjoy having a heightened sense of taste and smell but have zero interest in having a crafty puff. I stopped around 18 years ago and took up running.

Set myself a goal of eventually running a 10K, then half marathon, then a full marathon.

But, interestingly, whilst I smoked (around 20 a day) I never coughed or suffered from chest infections. Whereas my daughter (smokes roll-ups) sounds dreadful.

It's not easy and you have to want to do it. Take control.

Well done on reaching 131.5 hours, keep it up!

When I gave up in the past I would sometimes have cheeky drags every so often and this would lead me back into addiction. This time feels different and I am sure it is because I was really well prepared mentally to stop. It does feel very different, almost cathartic in a way.

Yes, my point. You have to want to give up!

Become a control freak.

You're doing very well and, believe it or not, it will get easier.

Hang in there TSY - it gets progressively easier.

I found it helpful, when thinking of having 'just one', to see it as a waste of the effort I had made up to that point.

It also helped me to see it as the voice of addiction (I'm not very good at explaining things) and to laugh at/defuse its efforts to persuade me to fail.

If you are really addicted to them then you will not be able to just have one or two puffs either. The addiction will be progressive and shortly after starting on one or two puffs you will be back up to however many you were smoking before.

132.5 hrs. Only had one piece of gum so far today!

Nicotine stained fingers are no more!

The worst fail I've had of recent weeks (stopped for 6 months this year and then started stupidly again) was 2 weeks ago.

Driving home from work, went into one garage didn't buy any baccy.
10 miles down the road 'cor, glad I didn't buy any, don't even feel like I need one'.... 'so if I don't need one, I'm not addicted, right?'...
'Awesome, I'll stop at this garage and buy some then, it's not a problem if I'm not addicted!'

Idiot!

God I remember this bit. It gets better when you start reckoning it in days instead of hours. I think I lost count at about 1,000.

TSY it is interesting to see the craving come to pass over time and you realise that much of what you thought it did - calm you down get rid of stress etc was actually only the feeding of the addiction.
If i go a long time now - mths without smoking - it is odd to have one as the memory of one and the reality are in no way matched - it tastes wafull and I cough a lot.
It gets easier and then suddenly you realise you have gone daya without even thinking about it
Hang on in

tSY I stopped doing a lot of the things that would be prior a 'smoke time' or at least doing something different. Breaking nicotine addiction is relatively easy as you don't have too many withdrawal symptoms, however breaking the habit and ignoring the smoking triggers is difficult.

I tried to keep myself as active as possible to take my mind off it. I stopped drinking & going to the pub for a couple of weeks, would get up and do the dishes straight after eating, wouldn't go into the newsagents in the morning, fill the car up so I wouldn't have to go into the garage, do the garden, tidied up the flat etc. I even avoided certain friends for a few days. After a week I had a couple of girls i was tryign to impress around to dinner. One of them sparked up after dinner and I took one from her, had three puffs and then stubbed it out. Pretty much I realised I was over it.

Good luck.

138 hours.

Cheers all.

My favourite one was the one I'd have the minute I got home. Currently hitting on girls that don't smoke as an added incentive to never fall back into the smoking trap! 😀

Not smoked for nearly 10 full days now!
Took me half an hour to even think about smoking when I woke up this morning, and that thought was 'wow, I haven't thought about smoking yet'!

Massively cut down on the gum at the weekend too! 😀

No, not really. I'm just crotchety in general 😀

On nicotine lozenges anyway to handle the cold turkey. I believe the furry shed monster is on cold turkey so hats off to him.

I've just finished my third week...into my fourth.

Good on you DD.
I've been on the gum, only 2x2mg a day since Friday. Going to substitute those for normal gum soon as TBH they're starting to make me feel a little sick. 😀

And Chewkw, nice one too. Just make sure you don't succumb when you're feeling better!
