There's massive confusion as to what my paint code and name actually is, because apparently Hyundai have used the same code with different names for both car model AND model year (WTAF?). In any case, I bought a can from Halfords and whilst I'm really pleased with the finish of the result it's a slightly different colour, a few hours after spraying. Slightly more ivory, in fact. So a couple of questions:
- Is it going to lighten up?
- Will lacquering it alter the shade?
It's not out by much.
So they changed the name of white but presumably it's the same colour as the paint code? Isn't the paint code normally in the engine bay somewhere?
Can't help with how lacquer will affect the colour though...
White is quite hard to match from spray cans.
I know the actual paint code, but it's not on the Halfords paint can, just the name. Which might make it hard since when I search for the paint code sometimes I get either name, and vice versa. Basically, who knows what'll arrive?

I would be surprised - they know what they are looking for and how to find it. You'll just have to hope the inspector is in a good mood on the day I think.
Molegrips you need to get yourself to an automotive paint company most can mix paint into a rattle car. Most big towns or city's should have one. Should be better quality than halfords and they should recognise the paint code and have a swatch that they can hold upto the car to confirm it is the right colour before the mix it.
Agree with above, just order a can from someone who will mix it up to the paint code.
My old Golf is a particular colour that Halfords didn't have, went to my local car paint shop who had 6 slightly different shades of just that one colour (same name, same code, but apparently shades varied from the factory).
I couldn't find a paint mixing place nearby using Google.. results polluted with trade suppliers, manufacturers and body repairs shops.
EDIT based on the above I called a trade place anyway and they do mix for DIYers. Ordered some.

The stuff from Coatings Direct was £15 for a spray can, and looks like the right colour. Dunno about ultimate quality but it goes on easier than the Halfords stuff and seems to be gelling for a smoother finish. Not that Halfords was bad, tbh.

Yeah that picture is the previous 'ceramic white' from Halfords which may or may not have been an attempt at code WAW.
New colour is drying in the garage now. I'll update later 🙂
I had this nonsense with my Kodiaq, turns out there’s at least 3 variants of the same colour with identical name and paint floating about in the VAG group, 2 of which my model was spec’d with… bonkers.
Well, I put far too much on. The whole lot went soft and the new paint didn't stick to the old paint. I removed it all in a big gloopy mess with a scraper and started again, this time with primer. And thin layers.

It had better not. I need to phone the lease company to have them take it away. They apparently take 5 days notice. Maybe I should call them now, set the clock ticking, add a bit of excitement?

If I call them I'll drop the flap or perhaps smash it on something whilst waving it around trying to dry it, or possiblynwhilst refitting it. Then I'll have to buy a new one but I won't be able to get the right part somehow and I'll have to come up with a bodge to fit it. Whilst that Will mostly work it will then require more bodging in increasingly elaborate schemes until I give up and have to pay the lease company three grand to fix it.

At least now I know just the flap can be replaced not the whole housing, which means I can get ne from a petrol car off eBay and they are cheap.

Respraying small bits you can remove from the car is really easy. But, as I have learned, colour matching white parts is not. I'll put that down to experience and replace with an eBay petrol flap.

To be fair this isn't actually my fault for a change.
It's easy/cheap if you assume that all the faffage time is "free". I'd imagine you could have it colour matched; professionally sprayed and refitted for less than a ton*. That's worth a few hours of your time; hence easier.

My faff time is free, yes. You may choose to put a price on it, but there is a different budget for time as there is for money. Paying someone else requires actual money of which there is a finite amount.
Given I can easily spray parts myself it was definitely worth a tenner on a can. I didn't know up front that the colour was wrong.
Even now I've spent £35 on a replacement flap I'm still ahead and don't forget the original flap was just glued together anyway.
Waiting for the pix of the replacement part to turn up in one of the other colours given the same name....

Fun fact - I was in my local auto paint suppliers and the paint shop guys were bringing in the fuel filler caps off of the cars they were spraying to do colour matches on.

You could try some of that HiSmile purple toothpaste that's advertised all over Facebook. Seems like it brings out the white by hiding the yellow
Halfords paint match is notoriously poor.
I used rapid paints two pack rattle can for a white T5 and it was perfect.
Maybe look for a vinyl warp in the right colour?

A decent local paint supplier is really worth it for this kind of thing. They can use a specrophotometer to match.
These guys did it off the paint code.
Paint code will give you the correct colour if not the same name. Problem will be batch and or manufacturer of the paint. There's always a risk no matter the colour, but white is notoriously difficult to match.
We supply jlr all sorts of different parts in their colour palette, I've never seen a white car built with all the panels the same colour, unless it's sprayed all in one go. Then there's the tinted clearcoat used for Ostuni white....

That will now act as a literal beacon to the inspector picking the car up as to 'what other shockers are we trying to hide here' I suspect.

After an unfortunate incident worh a lorry full of paint going to the nearby B&Q depot a couple of weeks ago, most cars in our village have a spray of white paint on them.....
