I'm looking to relocate to a new city and was wondering which you suggest. It needs to be a decent size due to work so lets say Cardiff size or bigger and have good access to mountain biking and other outdoor activities. I currently live in Bristol but the houses are quite expensive so i'm looking for somewhere cheaper.
Thanks
1st post, welcome.
First where can you get a job?
Whats important to you?
I was having this conversation earlier and the conclusion was Melbourne
Edinburgh. Best biking, pretty, not as dirty as most cities, less ****s, more history - all round excellent.
Newcastle.
Lots of biking options, clean, stacks of history. Great bars.
Sheffield. For mtbing you'll have trouble beating it. The peak district on your doorstep plus 2 woods in the city with mtb trails and loads of little woods and bridleways that criss cross the city to make up your own routes, there's also a shedload of hills in the city. The people are generally friendly and the ciy has lots going on. The only bad thing about the city is the state of the roads, without doubt they are the worst in britain.
Not Liverpool. We're full. Plus people would just take the piss out of you because of your accent.
I'm in bristol, and I quite like Leeds.
I'm 24 and would like to be near a city but not live in the center. On the outskirts would be ideal. I can get a job in pretty much any city. I enjoy outdoor sports and will be looking to buy my first house. Also I don't want to be too far north as i don't want to be too far from family which crosses Edinburgh and Newcastle off the list. Leeds is probably as far north as i would like to go.
Glasgow and Edinburgh are both great cities, albeit both quite different. And both are quicker to the lakes than Sheffield. ๐
There's not many jobs for me in Liverpool for some reason.
I was thinking Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield or Cardiff. Any where else?
Thanks for the help much appreciated.
Manchester or Sheffield.
Near to Sheff I'd say.
On reading the title I thinking Bristol. It's expensive for a reason. Cardiff is nice too.
Also I don't want to be too far north ... which crosses Edinburgh and Newcastle off the list
Edinburgh isn't north, it is in Central belt Scotland so put it back on your list.
You can't go far wrong with any of them in the north for being close to decent riding
so lets say Cardiff size
I'd go for....Cardiff, that's pretty Cardiff sized.
Mods, rename this thread to 'where do you live?' since that's the question everone'll be answering ๐
Along those lines I'd vote for Cardiff ๐ It has some lovely suburbs with character which aren't too expensive, and you can still ride to the trails in less than half an hour and walk to town if you want. I think Swansea is better than Cardiff for riding, but perhaps not for everything else. It's a bit further out of the way too.
I'd take exception with binners 'anywhere in the North'. There are some great Northern cities for riding but there are some where it's a bit of a pain to ride from the door and you'd be driving to ride.
Edinburgh. Best biking
Really? Pentlands are good, but what else?
Edinburgh, - clean errr I don't think so, have you seen what the pollution has done to the buildings ๐
Perhaps the City of Bath or Exeter.
You can get a job in any city can you, what is your profession? Prostitute?
Chester, as a city it isn't as big as Cardiff but the greater urban area is well, big. Good road links, North wales is about a mile away.
Manchester is ok. I'd like to move to Inverness though
When I move back to the UK, I will probably be looking at Scottish cities and Cardiff/south wales, maybe with a slight bias towards Cardiff.
Only downside to Cardiff, for me, is that the road riding isn't as good as some other places.
Exeter as mentioned is lovely, how close is the riding there?
I'm an engineer not a prostitute haha
Chester's nice but the surrounding area is pan flat.
Crime is rife in machester and the city feels big.
Sheffield, I don't live there but always been impressed with the place. The city feels friendly and as you drive across the city you can spot bridleways all over and like 'ohh wonder where that goes' Steve Peat is from there. Sheffield should be your only choice.
Edinburgh. Best biking
Really? Pentlands are good, but what else?
Because the tweed valley is miiiiiiiiiiiles away.
Yeah, bit far to ride though isn't it?
I think the defintion of a 'city' having good riding is that you can ride to it. If you have to drive then it's not riding around that city.
Wouldn't go for Liverpool and never liked riding or climbing in the Peak that much. I'd be looking at Cardiff, Swansea way meself.

I've worked in and around Manchester since 1981 and never been mugged, robbed, burgled, raped or murdered. Mind you, I don't live in the city.
I moved here because I already had some climbing pals in the area and access to the Peak, Lakes, N Yorks and N Wales is excellent.
Sheffield is MUCH nicer though.
Civil or mechanical engineer?
Why not just buy a house in South Glos? That's what all the engineers I know of who work in Bristol are doing?
I don't mind driving to locations. Just looking for riding less than 30mins away by car but i will also do longer drives now and then.
One thing that would put me off moving to Scotland would be SNP

No. That's not true Molgrips says you meant ride. ๐
Is the quality of cycling the only criteria?
For things to do, places to go, Manchester looks hard to beat. (I hope I'm not wrong, I'm moving there next week)
Consider Leeds.
Nice, compact, vibrant city centre
Great travel links - planes, trains and automobiles,
Enough areas around it to suit ANY housing budget.
Plenty of riding within 30mins drive - Harrogate, Bingley, etc
1:45hours to the lakes, 1:00hours to the Dales, 1.5hours to the Moors, 1:25hours to the peaks, 2.5hours to NWales.
Easy to get to Sheffield, Manchester and Newcastle and even Derby at a push.
I'm also like rock climbing, airsoft and cycling if that helps.
I've worked in and around Manchester since 1981 and never been mugged, robbed, burgled, raped or murdered.
Well someone's doing all that mugging, robbing, burglary, raping and murdering, and if you have not been a victim......
ps: I suppose if we swapped raping for rapping we could fit Kanye West up for the lot of it, especially with his brother Fred's history.
I reckon it's between Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield. I guess i'll just go to each and see what they're like.
Climbing AND biking? Sheffield, for sure.
I couldn't suggest Manchester, far too big to ride out of/across.
Cardiff has the big advantage of not being in the north.

You don't need to, you could live in the suburbs out Ashton, Stalybridge way to be right on the Pennines.
Personally I think you would find what you want in quite a few cities, pick 2 or 3 and see what jobs come up on the main jobs sites. IMO more important to get a job with a decent company than be too restrictive on the specific city if you are starting the process with an open mind to location.
Sheffield, or downsize all the way to Derby.

There are quite a few Welsh people to deal with there though ๐ Other than that it looks lovely.
Inverness would be my first choice. Not great as a city tbh but in terms of access to open country not sure it can be beat. Airport access to other parts of the UK too. Maybe Aberdeen. Sterling might be a bit small.

Got to be Sheffield then. It's where engineering was invented. Probably.
I'm biased like, being a Sheffielder, but it's a brilliant city. Some shithole parts, the same as anywhere else, but on the whole very nice. You'd want to be looking at the west side, possibly north-west, for proximity to all that the Peak District has to offer. Crookes, Walkley, Hillsborough, Abbeydale areas if you need to get in to town. Stannington, Loxley, Grenoside, maybe even Oughtibridge or Bradfield if not.
Lancaster big enough for you? Easy reach of the lakes and dales, peak District and Scotland doable.
