thanks to the eurostar debarcle last xmas i have 2 free return tickets to Brussels, so will be attempting another trip to Bruges, but not through flippin Thomas cook/cresta who have horrendous customer service (however refund couldn't have been simpler from Eurostar) so will arrange this trip myself, so...
anyone recommend a place to stay in bruges? hotel/guesthse or anything else you have good experience of

The more expensive Martins one is the hotel that features in the movie In Bruges.

Let me think. I found a website with them all listed on with secure shopping facility. Basically avoiding a UK website hefty-cut.
Stayed at the Martins Brugges too. Great hotel.
