Try Shelley, just abour 6 miles out of Huddersfield. Good riding. Train station at Shepley which is walking distance and regular buses to Hudds etc. Reasonable access to M1 and M62.
New Mill, just outside Holmfirth, or scholes, Hepworth.?
loads of riding straight out of door, plus cut gate is only 15 mins drive away, (or you could ride there). great village
thanks guys but Shelley, Holmfirth etc are too far south of M62
3 bed house for sale in Greetland.
10 mins from HFX train station.
Prestwich.

Prestwich.
'tis not really close to Hudds/Halifax but thanks anyway
Stretford, Manchester to Jct23 is 36mins for me.
Set off earlier or learn how to spot lane-flow and you'll be moving quicker than others.
Prestwich to Hudds is even quicker.
'Spot Lane Flow' I've heard it all now! You must be one of those last second constant lane swappers that cause everyone to put the brakes on and cause a mexican wave of traffic jams going way back. I'll think of you next time I'm sat on the M62 twiddling my thumbs and wondering what's caused the Jam. You wouldn't do it in that time today either as it's now closed both ways at junction 23 while they tidy up a smash. There's gonna be some people late home tonight! 8)
I thought "learn how to spot lane-flow" involved a pipe, driving gloves, deck-chair, high-vis vest and a clipboard
No. Drive around the M60 at rush hour and youll notice that two junctions before Barton bridge the slow lane is the fastest then 20m's before the bridge it becones the fast lane that is the fastest. Thats constant.
Spot the flow means flow not lane charging..
Ever been in a sweet spot? Empty all around you but snarled ahead? Every so often youll be past by a cluster if speeders.
This only works in medium traffic if you keep you speed constant..
Sowerby Bridge is clearly your place. Train station, loads of good beer, close to M62 and when the hills are full of snow there is never any in Sowerby Bridge.
Loads of really good riding and is just under Norland Moor where Davey boy wonders photo is taken. Brand new swimming pool too.
Hora I once pushed you up the hill out of Sowerby Bridge when the titanium spring on your Santa Cruz was slowing you down! So I'll bow down to your superior knowledge! 😉
Whats going on with the pubs in the centre of Hebden? Both the ones I like are closed down.
don't move round here, its rubbish, worst beer in the world, crap riding, pubs are rubbish, music scene sucks, no hills, the local bike magazine is at best, average....did i mention the crap riding?
Any experiences/views on living in Sowood, Stainland & Barkisland?
I'm in Hebden. Nice town, great riding, but often wet, sometimes ridiculously. I like Huddersfield - more varied and 'real' the Hebden, which can be a bit small, cliquey and Guardianesque. Better value for money in Huddersfield, too.
Marsden has been mentioned, go take a look. Good beer, great pies and loads of good rides.
ElShalimo, I regularly bike through all those places, they all look lovely. We often go for meals at the New Inn in Sowood. (I live in Lindley and like being in the suburbs)
Been looking in Golcar and Slaithwaite but found a nice house at a sensible price in Stainland. The area appears to be really nice although I'll bet it's horrendous up there yesterday/today in this weather
We've recently moved to Kirkburton/High Burton from South Manchester. Absolutely loving it, a brilliant little place.
The wife commutes by car into Sheffield and I either ride into Leeds (1hr) or bus/train into Manchester (1.5-2hrs).
I can't say the immediate Kirkburton area is crisscrossed with bridleways, in fact they mostly seem to be footpaths on OS.
Huddersfield town is actually a pretty nice place as well.
Slaithwaite's nice, but the hills are more rolling than Calderdale - depends if you like your riding steep. Huddersfield's got a lot more going for it than people realise.
Stainland is nice, it's one of the places we were looking at before we ended up in Golcar. We just didn't find the right house. Access to M62 is great and you are between Halifax and Huddersfield but nicely away from it all. Riding is great as it's officially 'Calderdale' . Good pubs and restaurants nearby too.
right forget everywhere else you need to come and live in Todmorden,,,,
everythings here including the ale...
just that we have the best riding around this next of the woods...hilss are in abundance... you will learn to climb well here !!!!!!! followed by plenty of downhill decents....bridleways, rooty sections....wood areas...we have the lot..Todmorden is small but the riding beats them all.... 😉
According to the misses (who's originally from Skircoat Green and whos parents still live there):
Of the places mentioned in the thread she would hands down pick Ripponden; great scenery and riding, picturesque village, quite cultural, modern pubs and restaurants. A general cool place to live with everything in easy distance. Sowerby Bridge is a good other option and offers all amenities you could want and is 5 mins away from Ripponden. Good train links with Manc.
Other option Hebden Bridge, but it is a bit alternative, so depends what you like
Todmorden, you always have to go 'one' better with everything! Number of fingers included!
Gimme 6. 😆
lol yorkie pud hahahha we still got the best riding ever !!! that'll do for me .........even if we do appear to have 6 fingers.... 😉
Tod? 😐
ElShamino - Sowood/Stainland/Barkisland... Sowood is nice, a bit nothing'ey as its just the houses stretched along the road between Stainland and Outlane. BUT (and its a big but!), there are some nice houses along there and as someone has mentioned, one of my favourite pubs in the world, the New Inn. Awesome food and beer and great service.
Stainland is more of a proper village. Few shops etc. No decent pub though IIRC. There are two at the Sowood end of the main street but I think one has shut and the other is crap.
Barkisland - nice houses but from what I know of it, a souless little place. Not a lot there...
If you're looking at those villages, Holywell Green would be worth a look. Bit like Stainland in that its got a few shops/pubs etc but retains the easy access to the M62.
Rishworth - not a lot there. Just houses along the road. Ripponden though as someone has mentioned is quite nice. Co-Op, pubs, nice restaurants. Dunno what your budget is but these look lovely in Ripponden:
Expensive: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-38667284.html
Sensible price: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-21635937.html?premiumA=true
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-35080783.html (we were half tempted to go and look at this place last year when it was on the market...)
Bit cheaper: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-33169981.html
Its not though is it? The riding around Tod is good but better both in Hebden and South Halifax.
Stainland-no decent pub?! Not for long as the new 1885 pub opens next month!
So I'm right. Theres no decent pub (at the moment).
Good call with the 1885 pub, I didn't know about that. Look forward to going as I've always liked the restaurant. Quite pricy but that's one of the things that's nice around this area, loads of choices of restaurants with prices to suit everyone. Ripponden near to Stainland too so all the nice pubs and restaurants there too. I like Ripponden too and it has great access to M62 if Manchester bound. Further out than Stainland if going East but not too far. Todmorden only 30 mins away so we can come and poach all your great riding too!
jesus Hebden is a mere 4 miles from Tod..lol i cycle tod and Hebden...crickey its not as if i cant cycle and extra four miles.... ahem.... well i wouldnt live in Hebden....wierd folk there....good riding tho ..and nice cafes... nice querky little town....if you want to be querky.. 😉
Yes Davey Boy you are right.well done.
I'd rather live somewhere quirky than somewhere shit.
Try Southowram
Midway between Halifax and Brighouse 10-15 mins walk to Halifax plenty of buses
Cock and Bottle nice friendly pub
Steam Brewery at Hipperholme 20 mins walk and real ale brewed on site
Some great riding too
Some people just dont appreciate their surroundings...doh...3 valleys, wot more do ya need..i just ignore the shit....and get out riding......no where is perfect and thers always shit around the next corner wherever you go...daveboywonder.... Put that in your piece pipe n chill...lol
Edgerton or around Outlane 😀
Southowram? Crikey... I'd rather be in Tod (or maybe somewhere else where its inhabitants can string proper sentences together).
