Car failed it's MOT today with a dented wheel bead. As the Toyota replacements are in excess of £250 per wheel for a measly 14" rim, can anyone recommend a good place for inexpensive wheels?

In all fairness, they do have some sets of 4 for 250-300 which seems about par for budget wheels. Cheaper than a pair of Hoops!

Why not just get the wheel fixed?

Try something like this part finder, I've used them with good success in the past!

Try that one, but there are loads of different spares finder sites on T'internet!

They are free if you use the email system and they go through to most major scrapyards in the UK.

Or try someone like Wheel Wizard to get your own repaired as legend suggests.

Is the damaged wheel steel or alloy?

If it's steel hammer it back into shape, if it's alloy these guy could fix it - http://www.alloywheelrepairs.net/

I think we shall go the route of getting a used steel rim for now, to get it through the mot, and then try to get the wheel repaired. I'd thought that a ding like that would not be repairable on an alloy but a few of the repair services listed above reckon that it is the sort of thing that they could do. Still, a repair looks as expensive as a new wheel, were one to want a non-matching 3rd party alloy.

Can you not just put the spare on and leave the alloy at home (if there is no spare it cannot fail the test, whereas if one is there it is testable iirc)

Spare is a space saver and they tell me that these do not count as valid wheels for the mot.

Anyone in the reading area got a car with 14" x 175 wheels that I can use for a day on Weds? 😉

You can repair bent alloy wheels, but I wouldn't bother. There's a bloke up our way who does them, generally Porsche & Ferrari wheels that cost a couple of grand a piece, and Moto-x bits that have cracked.

With a Corolla wheel, you'll be saving bugger all over the cost of a replacement (probably £70 to £80 for a repair and repaint), and have a repaired wheel, which is never going to be as strong.

I'd just get on ebay / autotrader / japanese car liker forum / scrapyards and buy a second hand wheel. There must be loads of Kevins about rolling on 19s with a set of standard alloys in the garage...
