Have ended up getting a salary sacrifice car through work. I’m weighing up options with what to do with my old one.
05 plate Nissan almera tino. Had lots of money put into it, back box on exhaust hanging off currently which I will have sorted. Rest of exhaust (even CAT), brake callipers, discs, handbrake, suspension bits (not shocks) have been replaced throughout 3 years I’ve had it. Clutch/gears still feel fine. MOT is until end of August. 85k on the clock. Petrol. Pain in the arse to source parts due to age/model.
A - get exhaust fixed and just sell now. Probably won’t get much for it with limited MOT length. Get a bit more money back from insurance.
B - get exhaust fixed, pay for some type of pre MOT and hope I can get it through the next MOT without much further investment. Seems unlikely that I won’t need to invest more though. No guarantee what is found now won’t be an issue in August. But if it did go through, another 12 months of MOT would really help. Get less money back from insurance.
C - Just keep it and get rid if fails. I don’t know why I’m considering this.
Thoughts?
d) Just get rid now and don’t spend a penny more on it. It’ll be worth sod-all even with the fixed exhaust.
As a serial bangernomics car tinkerer I’m with option D above.
Cars like this are only worth something to yourself if you plan on keeping them and using it. The market value is going to be pretty low even if it was fixed/sorted with an MOT and the fact you have a new shiny incoming car means I’d punt it on eBay as spares & repair and enjoy hassle free motoring.
Yeah get rid as soon as the new one arrives. It's gonna be worth peanuts whatever you do to it. Cut your losses.
Or try WBAC.com and see what figure they give, allow for more negotiation when/IF you take it to the WBAC place, but they will just agree a figure and pay (albeit a few days later), much less hassle. Low milage may get someone interested on local auction site just have to put up with dealers offering £50 cash!!
...Be interesting what the scrap valve would be, another thought?

They're all okay, it's the exhaust box that's a problem
As above, eBay marked as sold as seen/short MOT, needs an exhaust/spares or repair and get something however minimal for it.
It's theoretically a £1,500 car with a full MOT and £500 without. However, the market for it is going to be absolutely miniscule so it'll be a pain to sell at £1,500. You may end up taking £1,000 just to get shot. So, if you assume it's a £500 car now, is it worth the time and effort to fix it up, MOT, advertise and deal with morons for the sake of an extra £500?
Fix the exhaust yourself as cheaply as possible and put it through an MOT - make it clear to the garage you're getting shot of it/ won't spend any money on it so you don't get upsold and do the basics like checking all the bulbs, tyres and wipes. A running car with a full MOT is still worth actual money.
However, the market for it is going to be absolutely miniscule so it'll be a pain to sell at £1,500.
Not sure I agree there - put it on Facebook/Gumtree, ignore all the timewasters (just don't reply) and first person to turn up with £1000-£1500 in cash gets it.
Hmmmmm, tough one..... With an MOT it'll be worth £1000 or more as that's about as cheap as working cars go for these days but is it worth the hassle? Probably worth at least half that as it is.
I'd probably stick it on Marketplace for £800 as is and see how it goes? It'll still be a cheap car and plenty of people need a cheap, working vehicle asap, usually after their own pos has gone pop.
Turn it into a microcamper and punt it on to a Dryrobe wearer for £5k. If you've got a roof rack for it make sure to add tentbox ready to the description.
I think it makes sense just to get it sold as soon as the new car comes up, with no further investment. Option D.
There’s always been that temptation with this car just to see “what if”. But yes, time to get rid!
