*Westhead Chippy, Croston, Lancs (local to me)

Others I used to frequent (a little too often sometimes!):

*Foster's, Alderley Edge, Cheshire (award winning before you get all indignant about its location)
*Frankies, West Didsbury, Manchester

Francine's, North Prospect Road, Plymouth. Also if you go any time after the middle of November they have a lifesize moving talking/singing Santa to irritate the bejeesus out of you whilst you queue. Oh yes, and there is invariably a queue (for a good reason).

POSTED 9 HOURS AGO # REPORT-POST

Awesome!

Definitely the best chips I've had for a while.

Where I used to live - The chip shop, Stafford St, Norwich.
Used to live about 20 steps from there & it took a lot of self discipline not to have more than one a week, especially as as its slap bang in the middle (about 50 steps either side) of 2 pubs. Miss it & the area loads..

Where I live now (& where I'm from originally) and my favourite chips in the World - Rossi's, Swansea. Best chips ever.

Riveresdale Fisheries in Cross Hills near Skipton is very good. Far better than any of the ones in Skipton.

I lived in Guiseley a couple of years ago and that had a couple of really good ones, one on Victoria road that seemed to just open in the evenings and Springfield fisheries that was open at lunch.

Trawlerman in Drighlington on Whitehall Road, just up the road from Leeds. Stuff of legends.

The classic" Trawler"! What about the Mermaid, Morley?

I have noticed one thing about this thread, the very West Yorkshire bias. As a Yorkshireman, infact born and bred Leeds bloke I have come to realize you can't get good fish and chips outside West Yorkshire, no I'll go as far as saying outside Leeds.

Nuff said, we need go no further.

I beg to differ in that when in england ive found although the Chips are passable in some gaffs fish is almost never fresh.

How ever the best one was in wales near cwmcarn, the fish and chip shop had neither fish nor chips . Ironic really . I was so hungry though

In Yorkshire the fish is definitely fresh, very fresh, so fresh it will eat the ****in chips

Within two minutes of my house is Sams Chippy, great chippy and you can buy a large chips for £2... enough to feed a family of four! Back 'home' I would ride 15miles for a portion of chips at Lloyds in Lampeter. Yum

trail rat where was that chippy? Used to live right at the bottom of the scenic drive and the closest good chippy used to be in Cross Keys but it changed hands and went from brilliant to ho hum.

It's weird, I too believe that Leeds has the best fish n chips in the world, even better than the ones from the coast.
Apparently, there are some good ones up in the NE too near the coast.

There's a few good ones near me - as long as they cook in drippin'. The bad ones are few and far between imo.

in some gaffs fish is almost never fresh.

Now here's the problem , fish for fish and chips shouldn't be too fresh as it's too wet which means its a bit mushy when cooked. It should be left for a day in the fridge to dry out before cooking (my family used to run a chippy when we moved back to Leeds in the mid 70's)

Aye but it shouldnt taste " fishy" either

Old fish tastes different to reasonably fresh fish

The shop closest to the a9 in aviemore has always been guilty of this

You end up with fish that tastes like the harry ramsdens crappy frozen fish

Kim's Plaice on Frimley High Street is excellent. Light and crispy fish and proper tasty chips.

Bloody hell, is NO ONE from Burnley reading this thread?

I can nominate Church Street chippie, the Abbey Friar and the one on Infant street up from Mannings (Jeff Ellis), all in Accrington, if that's any help to you?

We're spoiled for choice in Accy, one of the few things it's got going for it.

As a Yorkshireman, infact born and bred Leeds bloke I have come to realize you can't get good fish and chips outside West Yorkshire, no I'll go as far as saying outside Leeds.

I obviously need to investigate some of the suggestions here, as without exception every chippie I've been to in Leeds has been rank.

The Crispy Cod in New Mills did the best fish and chips around when I lived there.

I now live in NZ and in 18 months have found only one chippy that doesn't do McCains frozen chips. Very disappointing.

Another vote for a West Yorks chippie - the Mayflower on Pool Road, Otley. Often first point of call when back up North visiting my Mum.
There's an ok one in Westbury on trym in Bristol where I live now, but none are a patch on any chippie I've been to in the Leeds area.
Oh and always haddock rather cod!

Chez Fred, Westbourne, Bournemouth.

Absolutely phenomenal, good restaurant section too and for £1 they'll sell you a 'Moggy Bag' of fish scraps so your feline friend doesn't miss out

I wish my local was 'A fish called Rhondda' but alas its Zero Plus, Cowbridge Rd, Cardiff. Tis ok though as their chips are excellent & is even endorsed by cheggers 🙂

Pye Green Chippy - just beside the big TV tower @ Cannock

Featherstone chippy

Both run by Greeks, seem to do a better job of doing fish and chips than most nationalities.

Tried Nardinis in Largs the other week, everyone had been saying how good the F&C were, ques out of the door - very dissapointing, overpriced, fish not great - Harry ramsdens do a better F&C.

Oh, thank the lord for the strong Leeds bias on here! I get tired of banging on about how sh1t the fish n chips are anywhere else, and especially how expensive they are on the wrong side of the Pennines!

Any hows - the Wayward Tyke in Ramsbottom is pretty good if a bit greasy. The new one in the middle of Chester (Blackstocks) is not bad and getting better but is nigh on 7 quid! Haven't asked for scraps yet as the staff often look confused...

When I'm back in the mother county I tend to go to the Wetherby Whaler as it's consistently good.

Haddock is the only way to go.

George's dominate my area; one in Belper, Ilkeston, Long Eaton and the pub one on the A610. To be fair they do bang out decent quality nosh. The Crest of the Wave in Ripley is ok. The demise of the Ilkeston Flyer was tragic. But I would travel to Bedford just to eat at Salty's, awesome food and the serving losses have beards and that's and everything.

Fishers do a pretty decent mobile chippy around Surrey.

McDermotts in Addington takes the crown though. Bang on every time. Tad pricey for eat-in but worth it.
