Sequence. Apparently more popular over the pond. Moronically simple yet deceptively addictive. Has all the classic thrills and spills of capturing territory and crapping on opponent's precious well-laid plans.

chess

2nd that but you've seen & heard nothing on earth like 4 prisoners playing Scrabble. (I just watched, standing close to the general alarm bell, finger poised)

Cards Against Humanity is always a winner provided your friends have share the same slightly twisted sense of humour, otherwise it's not going to go down well. Not a game I'd want to play with my parents! (or kids if I had anyway).

I played War on Terror for the first time. A lot of fun, kinda like Risk meets Settlers of Catan. Plenty of opportunity for secret deal making/break, and the game has a great sense of irony and satire when it comes to it's action cards.

Cards against humanity +1, On a couple of occasions I had to get someone else to read out my cards as i couldn't see through the tears! Played it with 3 generations of the outlaws. Summary; MOL is filthy, not-niece had to be enlightened as to what exactly a robust mongoloid child was, any reference to McCann, Savile or Poo was a winner.

If you like that, try gloom, slightly less sick, but the same sort of storytelling humor with cards.

there's an older american game called apples to apples that's a sort of family version of cards against humanity

My 9-year old son asked for Scotland Yard, which we played quite a lot over Christmas, that was quite good.
We also got Tension which was quite good fun, though my son got into a huff over it!

Cobble here also, I swear sometimes my card matches nothing...

My daughter got "Enchanted Forest" which was quite good as a family game, basically a memory game, with some tactics thrown in, it gets harder the more you drink

Cards Against Humanity is awesome. We also have one called Werewolf (I think) which is really good, best if you get the app for your phone it's really well done. Munchkin is fun as well. As is Dixit.

I second the recommendation for Carcassonne:

(not my photo)
Played a great game of this with a group ranging in age from 5 to 74 years.

Carcassonne is ace, not least because you can teach it in about two minutes. Scales nicely too.

Dobble, got 2 versions, the 4 year old clearly has premonitions of the cards to be as good as she is but most fun was actually, bird bingo. That's bingo, but with birds, nothing more than that. Entertained an 82 year old as much as a 2 year old (who was helping and checking).

Dobble - my wife is a total ninja at that, completely unbeatable. I sit and stare at my first card and she's got rid of her whole pack. I have no idea how she does it. She's the same with Mastermind - her record is 2 guesses to beat me!!

We got Labyrinth for Christmas and it's ace - seems over simple until you start playing it. Fantastic.

Bananagrams - great game!

I really want to play Settlers of Catan but don't have anyone to play with.

Quirkle - kinda like scrabble with shapes and colours. Great game.

Ones for people to try:
Hey that's my fish! Seems a bit pricy for what you get but an ace simple game.
Hare and Tortoise - ask Peterpoddy how great this is! Can't really explain it easily, fairly easy to pick up and it has the great advantage of laying people low who think they'll be great at it and come unstuck near the end!!
