[Closed] What post-ride (healthy,) tasty and satisfying snack?

[#11655373]

My riding is done at night, once the kids are sorted. I tend to get home anywhere between 2230-2330 and often fancy something to eat. Part hunger, part greed

Over the christmas period it was getting ridiculous, I've been eating pannetone, mince pies, christmas pudding, various cakes, biscuits, chocolate, nuts, cheese, cold meat etc

This has to stop! I came back last night and, trying to be healthier, had some dates. But then ate around 20 of them in one go, they'd already been pitted so it was like eating sweets

I dabbled with rice crackers and philadelphia for a bit but it's not exactly satisfying. Have plenty of fruit around but not quite as appealing as other snacks

I'm showering and then heading to bed after that so not using up those calories. I know one option is just not to eat but let's just pretend that option isn't there 🙂

Any ideas or recommendations?

For Goodness Shake bottle and if needs be, pour it over some oats that you've softened up (so they swell up quickly and make you feel fuller) with some boiled water.

As above, not sure fruit cuts the mustard for post-ride food, to much sugar and not much of anything else. You want some slow release carbs and some protein I'd have thought.
Couple of slices of brown bread or a wrap with some chicken and salad?
Jacket spub and tuna mayo?
Even a cold can of beans would do the job. Heat up and pour over brown toast if required.

Porridge. Slow release, protein from the milk, fills you up.

Or toast. Or cheese on toast.

Pork pie and a pint ya soft gett

The eating late thing is a myth. If you have done exercise you are replacing what you have burned. Most people who eat late eat rubbish .

crumpets or porridge pots. I know the pots are expensive when it isn't that hard to make porridge at home but only needing to put water in the pot is very handy when looking for something fast.

Rasberries,Blueberries, proper greek yoghurt and honey to sweeten slightly. If mega ride stir in some Alpen also.
Fresh Rasberries are silly money at the mo' so I just put some frozen ones in a bowl to defrost beforehand.

Take a peanut butter sarnie on your ride. Have a sandwich break halfway.

When in bed take some Itsu seaweed sheets and pint of water. Also a tumbler with a single measure of whisky. Snack, drink, read. Snore.

Works for me.

It is, also works really well on toast.

Its also a great snack to take riding or just for general face stuffage from breakfast to supper.

I love a bit of fruit in general but I can't ever think of a time where a big bowl of berries and yoghurt is going to cut it.

Eggy bread with brown or red sauce. Quick, easy and hits the spot after a ride.

Dont think this thread needs any more than this.
Mind you i seem to have found myself in a rather weird place where that constitutes christmas morning breakfast. Revelation!

My mid ride snack is Grated Carrot, Humous and lemon in a bap. (or sometime carrot, humous and crispy bacon)

Milk, banana, a simple whey protein powder, frozen berries.

In a blender and blitz and drink. Good and balanced with plenty of good recovery stuff.

Can be prepared and drank in under 5 mins easy.

Prep slow cooker in the morning.
(Beef stew, Dahl, veg soup)

Come home to a kitchen full of mouthwatering smell.

Left overs can be grazed on during the week or taken to work.

Anything with a bit of protein will satisfy. My go-to is scrambled eggs on toast, maybe with a peanut butter on toast to follow. Careful with the peanut butter - a lot of brands are packed with sugar (and palm oil).

I used to have a couple of Muller rice pots years ago. They Lways hit the spot for me.

These days I always have some cooked chicken/lamb or beef in the fridge, either left overs from a Sunday roast or cooked midweek. I'll have some of that in a wrap with what ever I fancy.

yep actually now i think about it i think the original recipe for mine also had humous in it.

All these suggestions for scrambled egg etc... are they just ignoreing the "home at 2230/2330 ish" part of the OP?

Mondays and Wednesdays I get home from training at 22:45, and that's when I have dinner. So no, not ignoring it at all 🙂

After a ride, especially a long and hard one, I always crave beans on toast and HP Sauce. If I'm feeling cheeky I'll vagazzle it with melted cheese and chilli flakes. I've never ridden so late...I'd never be able to get to sleep after a ride, but don't see why the lateness of the evening would deter me from a Beans on Toast craving.

This requirement seems written for Huel's new hot and spicy range.

https://uk.huel.com/products/huel-hot-savoury

Have not tried any Huel product myself but would be interested to hear from those that have (and not really interested in hearing from those that haven't).

I used to ride later more often than earlier and can confirm that lateness does not deter me from raiding fridge and cupboards for diverse and filling foodstuffs. From leftovers to

11pm: ‘will just do quick frozen vegburger on bun, oh go on then, maybe some oven chips, they only take a short while...I can have a drink and this leftover/s while waiting for them to cook...’

(Beige interval 🍺🥐🍪🥜🧀)

11:40pm: Not hungry but now it’s cooked...🍟🍔

3am: 👁 👁

Some real gems here, thanks

- yoghurt and fruit is easily doable, have that stuff in the fridge right now. although not necessarily satisfying
- grated carrot, houmous/peanut butter and squeeze of lemon sounds really nice, and again have that stuff here. And plenty of bread products to stick that in, always have wraps here

I've usually eaten earlier in the evening with the family, so this is more of a greedy snack rather than a second dinner. Although if dinner leftovers haven't been fully put away I've been known to eat some of that 🙂

Not having to 'cook' anything is definitely better. I'd been trying to avoid so many carbs because I've definitely put on some xmas weight

My default is muesli

An omelette is really quick and would supply what you need with some bread

Bowl of porridge BEFORE you ride. Will reduce the glucose deficit causing your post ride hunger. Protein when you get home - shake or an egg. If you can't wait, drink the egg.

I’m going to say omelette. I had them from time to time anyway but the wife bought an omelette maker at the supermarket the other day (£12). Game changer for ease of cooking an omelette and not stinking the kitchen out frying one on the hob. Literally whack 2 eggs in a cup, beat with a fork, splash of milk, add some ham or whatever and 5 mins in the maker and you’re done. Wipe clean - no proper washing required. Not high in calories or carbs and plenty of recovery protein. I’ve taken to adding a few splashes of Nando’s medium Piri Piri sauce to pep up the flavour 😝

The time that you're getting home sounds the perfect time to avail yourself of a local eating establishment that can cater to all your nutritional needs

Chilli sauce?

I've done that quite a few times on the way back from a night ride. If not then my default is cheese on toast with loads of Worcester sauce

I'd rather go to bed starving than eat Weetabix, it belongs on the floor of a flat roofed pub.

Chips, cheese, curry sauce.

Not had it for years, really want it now 😂

Your carroty wrap things there need falafel. Falafel, grated carrot, hummus, maybe some form of greenery, mango chutney. Nom.

Actually. Binners has it.

He's had it for years and no-one else wants it.

I may get doubters on this but yoghurt, (decent) peanut butter and banana all mashed up with a fork is delicious. Coconut 'yoghurt' is also really nice if you want it vegan.

I just added some Bonne Maman low sugar raspberry jam too, mmmmm......
