...to make up for the fairly poor speakers on my LCD tv.

Is it possible to get some decent ones for around £50?

There're 101 surround sound systems you could get for that much (OK, so you wont find a review for them in what hi-fi), just don't plug in the 2 rear ones.

Check what outputs your TV has, if theres an audio line out then any old PC speakers will work, otherwise you might have to spend more money on stuff like an AV reciever.

Problem is, if you get decent speakers, they're likely to just show up the crappy amplifier in the TV as being, well, crappy...

PS: It might end up sounding actually worse. If I were you, I'd invest in a separate amplifier as well. That would definitely sort it.

Agree with MrWoppit, get a separate amp.
I bought a pair of Celestion F2 100watt speakers at a boot sale for £15 !!!!
Paired with a Technics class AA amp that I bought for peanuts as well.
Sounds awesome and some similar setup can be had for £50 if you look around a bit 🙂

Those prices for the control 1's are for a single speakers. They are nice though, I used 4 of them with an 85" LCD earlier this year and they do sound good.

Thought I would bump this as I haven't gotten around to doing anything about it yet. I was going to get those JBL ones but noticed that they aren't active and will therefore need an amplifier, which I would like to avoid if possible.

Any further suggestions? The tv is a Panasonic TX-L37S20b, if that helps.

A plasma panel we have does not have built in speakers but does have an amp - but it's not right and emits a background buzzing noise through any speakers that are connected.
So I started looking for a cheap amp/speakers to by-pass the built in amp but I found out that not many cheap amps have remote control and may not be able to use the telly remote to change volume, so I eventually bought a Panasonic home theatre setup for £35 and connected it to the telly via the headphone socket.
I only connected the subwoofer, centre and two other speakers (as I can't be bothered running all the cables) and it's working great - plus I've got a decent DVD/CD player and radio into the bargain.

So, take a look on ebay at home theatre setups and see what you can get.

we got one of these to go with our LCD TV from Richer

Never had proper surround sound and doubtless it isn't as good but transformed the tinny speaker quality of the built in ones.

Those soundbars are a little pricey for me. I was hoping to keep it simple, but looks like it's going to be more complicated than I thought.

I will check out ebay for some surround sound system bargains

go on ebay and get an 5.1 system, connect it via spdif optical/coaxial and disconnect the 2 rear speakers.
