As above, really. I can get a laptop or a tablet in line of sight, and want to alleviate the boredom when I can't get out for an actual ride.

What do people watch for anything up to an hour or so?

I use GCN sessions on YouTube for my proper sessions. If I just want to turn my legs for a bit I like a panel game show (insert name here being the preferred choice this week).

Not a turbo but on the cross trainer I like to watch all the Anthill (and others) Mountain Bike films. By and large they're full of dusty trails and sunsets etc - it reminds me why I'm pounding away for an hour on the bloody thing at 6pm on a Tuesday in Jan, so when it's 6pm on a Tuesday in June I'm out riding and enjoying it as much as I can be and not blowing out my arse because I spent the dark months on my arse eating cakes.

^ yep. To be honest, someone mentioned eating cake. I'd much rather eat cake for 6 months of the year than spend 6 months on a turbo but then I'm no olympic athlete and neither are any of the people I normally ride with so if we're all blowing out our arses come the sunshine, at least we're all doing it together (and still having a laugh).

Couldn't contemplate an hour on the turbo without ZWIFT. The races and mass group rides are an easy way to push yourself for an hour. Can even heckle others with the text system. Very active Facebook community too, so you can bitch about all the people you think are cheating.

Are these sorts of people even classed as cyclists?

Tie a pork pie to my dogs tail and watch her spin around.

That or the stuff my wife bans such as sci fi.

I watch my herculean thighs pumping like Victorian beam engines and generating the kind of power that can only otherwise be found in supernovae.

New to TT - only 4 rides in.
Quite possibly the dullest thing ever - an hour and I'm ready to cry.
Anything to engage the mind will be an improvement.
Proper actual ride tomorrow morning hopefully ๐Ÿ™‚

Sufferfest or listen to radio, very short of time so beasting myself on turbo for 45mins/an hour is most effective use of time (and about as much as I can stand before getting very bored)
Faff of sorting kit, riding, cleaning stuff of a night ride would mean about 25mins moving time, or getting home too late to wind down & get a decent night sleep, which would be Kack in comparison ๐Ÿ˜‰

Virtual bike riding complete with virtual heckling with virtual friends.

A little piece of me just died finding out that was a "thing".

Zwift is excellent if you have to spend time on the turbo. Very engaging and lots of options including work outs, group rides, races, chain gangs
Weather was poor last Sunday and did 100km in just under 3 hours with it

Really worth giving it a try IMO

Spin Class instead. Watch the numbers and power output, then again the lights are out so you can;t see anything else anyway.

Isn't swimming just another form of excercise where you don't go anywhere, but you also can't even watch the tv?

Mostly netflix and amazon instant video. So far this winter, 4 series of 24, a series of Jennifer Jones, series of Daredevil, and a few films.

Do people not ride their bikes outdoors anymore?

I don't think the two activities are mutually exclusive. I do both. Obviously not at the same time (though I guess I could turbo on the patio.)

i sold mine and go swimming instead

I'm sure there is a forum somewhere where people are being berated for swimming in a pool instead of winter open water.

+1.

The turbo is good if i'm at home looking after this kids.
Tonight is a good example - wife out for eve, kids will be in bed by 8.30 - I can get in 45mins - 1hr of quality riding (quality from a leg/cardio point of view) whilst they are asleep.

However, providing the weather isn't too horrific, i'll do a couple of hours outside on Sunday morning.

youtube cyclocross vids or red bull mtb vids, though recently the red bull vids keep crashing. I barely register wahts happening to be honest once I'm out of warm up.

Wont be long now till its light enoguh to mean I'll be using the turbo a lot less. Can't bloody wait!

I generally watch the array of floaters and stars that appear, or the back of my eyelids. That and visualisations of running on the track as that's how i judge my efforts.
