I think when you have electronic artists you need to make sure the lighting show etc is on point. Rampage in Belgium seem to manage this with DNB stuff.

Plus everyone is off their tits on MDMA helps I guess.

Legowelt is another G who I've had the pleasure of seeing play a few times, he's a great dude also.

Xosar (who dates/used to date Legowelt for trivia points) is also a master of hardware samplers, making great use of Korg Electribes here:

Kink in recent years has shot to popularity with his sample-heavy house/techno. There are a few vids of him making full tracks from vinyl samples and a monosynth.

Fatima Yamaha is another excellent live act, skip to 25:40 sec for the feels. You can also see my ugly mug in the background throughout

Voiski blew me away when i first watched this set, his use of drum synths and sequencers is just magical:

It's all just great

Naturally, the best bit about boiler room videos is watching the guys who are absolutely ****ted in the background

I feel the need to defend Sleaford Mods. They are absolutely awesome live! It doesn’t come across on YouTube vids etc but ‘Bez’ standing there pressing play then standing drinking a can of Stella is kind of the point. It’s stark contrast to Jason’s visceral stage presence.

You know when you hear old punks asking where the anger is? Go and watch Sleaford Mods live...

oh... and there are few better nights out in the world than watching LCD or Orbital live 😀

Wouldn't bother binbins. It's good that some people just don't get em. Bit like punk really.

First saw them in the tiny Joiners pub in Southampton. So close Jason was flicking his sweat on us. Fab gig.

Phil n Paul doing well for a couple of old geezers. Saw them in Portsmouth - had my head in the bass bin all night. Awesome 😀

Orbital tonight were pretty poor.  It’s like they were just going through the motions.

We watched Orbital on the telly, clearly you had to be there to appreciate to the bass becuse it was missing when transferred through the tv sound bar.

Still good to see them rocking out a bit though.

LCD soundsystem put on an awesome show last night.

A return to Despacio was also rather special after a visit at Glastonbury a few years back. Almost certainly the worlds finest disco soundsystem - 50kw power run at c20% in a space that holds less than 1000 people.  4 decks, 100% vinyl (when they wanted to play music that they couldn’t source or didn’t exist on vinyl they’ve had it pressed specially (!).  The antithesis of a David Guetta premixed sent.

Just watching Underworld on BBC4 now at the radio 1 thing and thinking Karl Hyde looks bloody old. It's because he is, 61 apparently!!

Still remember him in that silly furry hat in the born slippy video like it was yesterday.

We watched it too, again the tinny speakers on the bedroom TV did the sound no favours whatsoever 😜

It was great to see the audience bopping along throwing shapes 🕺👋👋💪

Actress gig last night was brilliant, although neither of us could work out what Actress was actually doing.

He sat in the middle of a string orchestra (London Contemporary Orchestra), including a harp, double bass and viola and they played lots of gorgeous sounds.

Not sure why LCd Soundsystem are in the thread -theyve always been a proper live band.

Ouch.  Was watching that too* Thinking 'how bloody young' he looks.  And he's got ten years on me.  Which means that I probably look closer to 70.

****ing hell!

*Little Dragon was the best act for me so far.  And what the hell happened to Beck's voice?  he was like a pub crooner tribute act singing 'Debra'.  Was so gutted that I turned it off and watched the 1999 live version on youtube instead.  Old is good.  New is good. New old is rubbish.

On the flipside, what do electronic artists/composers do on stage if they in future decide to replace their electro-gubbins with a live band?

Just watched Goldie on BBC's Big Weekend and was wondering if the young members of the audience are thinking that 'Goldie' is a band.  With a random older bald dude wandering about aimlessly on the stage looking like he's slipped by security but he seemed harmless and happy enough so they left him alone.

I saw New Order many moons ago. Gillian Gilbert came on stage, pressed play on a tape deck and went off again. Great concert though 🙂

Just caught up with the underworld set via iplayer. Wow, very impressive. Wonder why   orbital weren’t on form in the same venue?

Karl Hyde is crazy - pure adrenaline embodied.

This happens a lot more than you think. Portishead and UNKLE both have great albums made with full classical orchestras.

Hey, how about someone who uses loops and shit off a boxdeviceunitappliance but then plays a real instrument… and sings…

Ed Sheeran got roasted on social meeja by people who were outraged by him miming and using pre-recorded backing tracks. He uses a loop box and layers stuff live, the trolls were too dim to understand what he was doing. KT Tunstall was the first person I ever saw using a loop box, she used it on Later... when she played Black Horse and the Cherry Tree, and she used it live at the Fleece when I saw her supporting Joss Stone, never seen one before, nearest thing was an Echoplex, and it impressed the hell out of me, being able to build complex layers of percussion, guitar and vocals on the fly.

As far as EDM goes, as I’m not the slightest bit interested in dancing, off me face or otherwise, I just don’t care what they do live, ‘cos I won’t be there. I was at the front for The Prodigy at IoW several years back, though, which is as close as I’ll get. It was pissing down and everyone was just going mental; I stuck it out for four songs, then retreated to the sound-desk, I’m too sodding old for that sort of thing now!

Portishead aren’t really an electronic band, though; they use samples, but Geoff Barrow goes to the extreme of recording special tracks, getting them pressed onto vinyl, then doing the scratching samples from those disks. The rest of the band play live, and I think there are drum loops added in as well. Goldfrapp use quite a lot of loop stuff, but Alison has a pretty big band with her normally, and sometimes has Portishead’s guitarist Adrian Utley with her as well. It has to be said, I’ve seen many, many bands play live over the last forty-odd years, and I’ve yet to see anyone miming, but then, I’m practically always at the front, and I can see quite clearly that the artists are playing and singing, it’s the little errors that show up during a performance.

Too old Count Zero ?

I'm off to the Will Sparks gig in Newcastle tonight and I'm 61years old ...

Admittedly it's just to pick up my 15 year old son and his pals afterwards ..😉😁
