Do foxes or badgers dig toilet holes in grass?
Badgers do for sure. The badger latrine is most likely what you are seeing.
Badgers always poo in the same place, away from the sett, they are very clean.
Cattle know to avoid this area as it smells funny. But put too many cows in a field and they have to use the badger poo area they would otherwise avoid and so get TB from the badgers, less cow density much reduces the contraction of TB.
Not much help to the OP as cows don't dig holes and badger ones are bigger than that.
Petrol and a match will take care of whatever it was.

Then came round later to retrieve them.
Maybe there are lots of these holes under lawn but we just don't see them because it's covered in grass..normally.
