Got a new laptop coming. No doubt it'll be full of bloatware and a 6-hour free sample of Mcaphee wanting £25 a month subscription to probe its inner workings to the nth degree and slow everything to a crawl.
Don't mind paying a bit, but want something simple, effective and which won't use up all my resource (its a fairly basic laptop for home use ie storing family photos, online banking, running the club membership)
Microsoft Defender.
Do an occasional scan with Malwarebytes.
What he said. Just uninstall whatever foisterware it comes with, Defender should step in automatically.
MS standard AV as above.
Wow! Perfect answer! Not only easy but free, and STW in unison! Is the world ending?
See lads, I told you he'd believe us. Bwahahah.
Er, oops.
Windows 8 comes with built in AV, which is good.
Your only issue is how to uninstall Macaffee, which may not be trivial 🙂
My method is to download a clean Windows DVD from MS and install from that, then download drivers from your manufacturer for anything that doesn't immediately work.
Or, you could just run the removal tool after uninstalling it.

I'm sure I'll have fun removing the rest of the crap too 🙄
