I am riding my hardtail commuting 5 miles each way. Wearing "5 ten's" which are canvas and getting soaking feet as soon as it rains. I looked at some neoprene foot type covers earlier in bike shops but there seem to be none for spikey flat pedals. They all are designed for racers or clips.Any recommendations ?

Waterproof socks if you're changing shoes at work, waterproof shoes if not...

Merino wool socks, they can get as wet as you like and your feet will remain warm and not uncomfortable.

As above. Five miles, in the rain? Wear a pair of waterproof walking shoes. Oh, and Rule 5.

(As an aside, don't do a Google image search for Rule 5 if you're at work! No idea what the link is, but... 😯 )

Yeah, you'd probably rip them all to shreds fairly quickly if you've got fairly aggressive flats.

Probably need to go for waterproof socks a la Sealskin (and someone else I noticed recently but can't for the life of me remember their company name).

Wear whatever and get wet feet? You'll struggle to keep your feet properly dry anyway.

Top tip is to stuff your shoes with newspaper as soon as you take them off, you won't get them dry in a working day, but they'll be a lot drier than if you left them. Even more so if you change the paper at lunch.

Stuff some cheap disposable nappies into them.

Got some winter shoes last winter - £100 down the poo tube. hiking boots probably better - main thing is to get the water past the collar - have tried clingfilm, gaffer tape, all sorts with mixed results, waterproof trousers if you can bear the sweatiness (which I can't)

5 miles? Plastic bags over your socks. Sorted! 😀

If its warm and wet, wear sandals. Your feet will get wet, but they'll dry off pretty quickly.

Anything with a hole in the top will let water in....
Waterproof socks help keep that water a bit warmer, proper boots with a velcro/neoprene style cuff will help to an extent.
I'd probably keep a stock of socks at work and swap to a shoe that dried out quicker...

A long mudguard with flap helps but is not perfect.

In other news man gets wet when it rains.

Just accept it and change your socks. There is an obsession about staying dry rather than comfortable and changing when at work.

I change shoes at work so when it looks wet i take a second set of socks. Bit grim putting wet shoes on to come home.

You can get some overshoes designed to fit over 'normal' footwear. I've got some old altura night vision, not sure exactly what is available now.

thanks for the tips. I always change shoes while at work and will just get wet and deal with it that way. We have showers and changing areas. To be fair I was not convinced by the shoe protectors much.

5 miles? spend £50 on a beater bike with full mudguards from the local paper. You'll be dry and you wont ruin your good kit or your good bike. Cheaper than replacing a pair of 5.10's that have rotted away.

I was trying to find some good waterproof flat pedal shoes for ages. Ended up down a slightly different route similar to what others have suggested:

Specialized 2FO shoes and water proof socks. The 2FOs are similar to a croc with 'brillo' pad type cushioning - sounds odd, I know! It's not scratchy like brillo pads though, just dries very quickly. Few hours near a radiator and they're dry. They also seem plenty grippy to me too. Using Superstar El Plastique things.

I'd go for the sealskin socks, they'll dry out and you won't notice wet shoes

I bought a pair of goretex puma sneakers in leather. Which i use some nikwax water reppelent oil on. Works good i think. But i do also recomend yo buy a shoe dryer"the one with hot air and two to four plastic tubes" fan. Its great for wet shoes. Cause wet shoes will stink. And drying em up fast will prevent some odour buildup. And the shoe dryer is great yo dry wet gloves or sweaty humid shelljacket shell trouser or a wet backpack. Instead of letting them airdry. Wich in time make them smell to.

For a 5 mile commute you could wear anything

I'd just wear a normal pair of shoes to commute in - preferably something that won't take so long to dry

Ha, that's very strange. Especially as the normal search takes you to the Velominati page

(Had to check on my phone!)

I've got some overshoes I got from Aldi a couple of years ago - they're loose "Gore-tex" type fabric rather than neoprene though so they fit bulky skate shoes/my boat feet.

Obviously not as warm as neoprene ones but I find them more comfortable and they're light.

Sealskinz socks are great - especially the knee-length version.
