It was patented to be over, not under.

Which is how all right thinking individuals have it anyway.

Yebbut that drawing needs revising.... the cardboard inners are much bigger nowadays as manufacturers cut down the amount of paper on a roll.

I always swap any over that are wrong in the office loos. We have three rolls per cubicle and the cleaners always install them upside down......

This is not the case if you get the supermarket own brand paper (Not the super cheap stuff, the mid-range 18 packs).

The wifes side of the family all hang the roll the wrong way - was convinced they have been trolling but i now suspect its a genetic flaw.

That patent doesn't necessarily show that theres a right or wrong way - maybe thats the old way and Footflap's office cleaners are doing it the new way - an innovation.. They're doing the Fosbury Flop, Flaps is doing the Western Roll (while he's doing the Eastern Cut-off). Lets not discuss the Straddle Technique.

It could be a wall's eye view.

Not at all. Fig 1. is obviously the back view (to better show perforations)

You've all missed the point the first sheet should be left folded to a point, so you can't see the untidy perforations, and part torn off sheets are just wrong.

It has to be the other way!

The action of tearing from the point where the paper is in contact with the wall prevents a "runaway" scenario.

Away from the wall is the stuff of madness

I am grateful the clarification given by the OP. It does look like very positive evidence and the mrs. is certainly in that camp. However, I tend to like it up against the wall.

How? The roll is still in contact with the wall in both scenarios.
