Oh God, how did I forget The Fifth Element and There Will Be Blood...?
bikebouySeven was, for me, gross.
It started off as a crime drama and turned into a film about gross visual images and dark psychological issues.
Once Sloth splattered the screen I realised I had better images I'd rather remember..I should have stayed, perhaps the story moved on, but I doubt it.
Seven doesn't really dwell on, or revel in gore or grossness. Although a lot is hinted at, discussed or implied it's nothing extreme or even out of the ordinairy for the serial killer / detective genre. It allows the audience to fill in the blanks with their imagination.
It is set in a very horrible real world, made all the more real by Morgan Freeman's character's lack of willingness to engage with it any longer.
It's a brilliant film and it does have plot twists that you won't have seen coming. It's so good it was massively influential on most films that came after it so it's probably lost some of it's punch, maybe even appears a bit derivative now but it wasn't at the time.
The Departed.
Wanted to re-watch that the other day, but, oddly, it's not available on iTunes which is my streaming service of voice (don't ask).
Nor is O Brother...
I would never bother disputing anyone else's choice, anymore than it's worth anyone disputing mine, but The Departed is brilliant. Even if it was badly scripted and plotted (which it wasn't), just watching Jack, Leonardo, Martin and Marky Mark in a film together is entertainment enough for me.
That last Star Wars film though, The Farce Awakens - can that be considered "well regarded" or have people come to realise that it was a pile of cack by now? And they've made another bloody one!
Arrival. Exceedingly slow and ultimately pretty dull. Deeply disappointed.
I have to agree with the negative comments about seven - they spend three quarters of the film trying to catch the psycho and then take him out into the desert , he cuts the outer flesh off his fingers so as not to leave prints - buy some gloves genius
gangs of new York is another one for me, went in expecting to see history based drama and all you got was Daniel day lewis doing pantomime baddy
DezB - Memberยwalking out of a cinema you say?Only 1 film ever: Highlander
Highlander 2, very nearly. Awful, awful film. Highlander though, no way. Excellent film.
Shawshank I do rate very highly but I don't rate it anywhere near the level of fan**** IMDB and Empire magazine readers do. Often it's there as best film of all time. Really? It's good, but no.
Avatar - balls to that and Mr "I don't do 3D gimmicks" and then proceeds to do 3D gimmicks.
Aliens - actually I do like that also, but nowhere near as much as many do. Alien on the other hand is a masterpiece.
Forest Gump, Saving Private Ryan - big pile of nope from me (SPR opening scene excepted).
Daniel day lewis doing pantomime baddy
See, also, There Will be Blood
Anything by Woody Allen. Utter tripe.
100!
Anything by woody Allen?
Even play it again Sam?
gangs of new York
+1 rubbish
War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise
Utterly dreadful film.
The Departed is okay, but nothing special.
just thought of another one, The Road. revels in being grim and miserable

On the DVD commentary, Fincher talks about the time a woman approached him at a party and berated him for ages about showing Paltrow's head in the box at the end. Despite this never actually happening. You never saw what was in the box, but the woman berated him for it, insisting he did show it.
It's a Wonderful Life. Mawkish bollocks.
Outside. Now.
Anything with Will Ferrell in it. He is just not funny.
I think Blade Runner is shit
Juno
The Royal Tenenbaums
The Wrestler
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Anything with Will Ferrell in it.
That is a good point; Anchorman is massively average.

As also stated word-for-word by my co-habitee by marriage.
Yet we watched that wholly ridiculous 'Stepbrothers' last week and laughed a lot (having also had teenagers ourselves at home a long time ago in a galaxy far away)
Also enjoyed him in that schmaltzy film about a drunk who gets kicked out of his job, marriage and home and lives on the front garden for three days (title escapes me)
I find that a cinematic diet of whole foods and fine wines is better with a periodical cheese board ๐
Quite a lot of hate for Withnail on here... I can't see why anyone would think it less than absolutely brilliant, so I'm going to need that one explaining to me.
Avatar though, sheesh. I couldn't see anything worthwhile beyond the special effects. Am I missing something?

nope, it was "Ferngully" with blue space cats. utter balls
ET, Spielberg at his worst
we watched that wholly ridiculous 'Stepbrothers' last week and laughed a lot
This is a very funny film, but he's only good when he's playing a manchild IMO.
See also: Elf.
The Day After Tomorrow.
Although this time I'm not too sure it was "well regarded" in the first instance.
No hate for Withnail and I from me, because I've never seen it, only the occasional excerpt. Same goes for Titanic.
Avatar - watched it once, manage about five minutes when it gets repeated. Tedious.

The Other Guys
Ferrell is very funny but agree Anchorman and the other big films he's been in are poor. Lower key roles or less popular films show him in a much better light. He's hilarious as Federal Wildlife Marshall Willenholly in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back

Hammy acting, unlikeable characters and awful script.
Hammy acting, unlikeable characters and awful script.
Which is pretty much the polar opposite of what I think of it: peerless dialogue, outstanding characterisation and superb acting.
Funny old world, innit!
I'm going to get grief for this but.
Godfather trilogy
Casino
Good Fellas
Like one film repeating the same thing and they just blur together. Yet I loved Donnie Brasco and Once Upon a Time in New York.
Meet Joe Black - nothing happens.
Every single musical ever put to film. Hideous, hideous creations. Just talk goddammit!
Nationwide Building Society..... Oh sorry films not firms
Anything with Jim Carrey in.
Oh, and Reservoir Dogs. Time I will never get back.
The Revenant
There Will be Blood
Any film with Daniel Day Lewis.
Yeah, The Revenant.
I watched that the other day because it came up on Sky Cinema, dour, slow, drudge.
I turned it off after 40mins, you're going to tell me now that it only got going after 45mins aren't you.
The Princess Bride......meh.
Interesting that I saw the revenant at the cinema and really enjoyed it but you I do think it should have had a bit more enthusiastic editing, could have lost half an hour or so and be better for it. I remember thinking that I wouldn't have enjoyed it at home because the cinematographic detail would be lost
Logged on here to say The Royal Tenenbaums as couldn't remember the name of it earlier. Agreed with Juno too.
The Revenant. Well shot. Couldn't understand a word Tom Hardy said. Kinda just the same thing throughout .... Get attacked, escape, survive, get attacked, escape, survive indispersed with crawling and grunting. Meh
Lock Stock- my favourite film.
Seven- one of my favourite films.
The Big Lebowski- classic entertainment.
Gone With The Wind- utter tripe.
Another vote for Withnail and I. Sorry to follow the herd but....
I saw it when it first came out in the late 80's hated it then, still can't bring myself to watch all the way through it even though I have tried just in case I missed something. I like some of of Paul McGann's work but..... Dreadful.
I got lots of shushes etc. in our local cinema for laughing and snorting most of the way through the Lord of the Rings the return of the King, which many seem to have regarded as quite good
On the other hand, The Usual Suspects is one of my favorites. It just shows different things are appreciated by people in different ways
Edit: oh yes, Blue Velvet . Didn't like that at all either.
I'm becoming a grumpy old man aren't I
The Princess Bride......meh.
Troll!
I wouldn't have enjoyed it at home because the cinematographic detail would be lost
It isn't the cinematics are stunningm, some good acting but by god they dragged the story line out and the boring "oh my god her survived again" got really silly.
The Princess Bride......meh.
Troll!
+1 to has to be a Troll. Everybody loves Princess Bride
Inception.
Standard fight/flight action flick with a bit of sixth-form-common-room-stoner philosophy thrown in.
Yeah yeah, all very deep: "What if, like, we think we're awake, but really, we're still in a dream, man?" but still ends with a goodies v baddies firefight on skis.
Quantum of Solace - fell asleep at the cinema!
The Matrix (see above)
I Heart Huckabee's (the only film I've ever left before the end)
Terminator 2,3,4 (or whatever) the original however is a masterpiece ๐
