Looking to get away for a weekend break next month, where we would people recommend? Looking for a good value hotel probably but may consider a guest house/BnB.
Personally I'd find somewhere in or around Keswick. Tends to be a bit quieter than further south. No specific recommendations though to be honest. It's a while since I stayed in one.
Coniston FTW. Plenty of B&B's and a couple of hotels. The Sun or The Black Bull to name two. The beer choice in the village is first rate. Loads of biking from the door as well.
Don't think I'll be taking the bike. I know the lakes reasonably well so looking specifically for accommodation.
We stayed in Queens Head Hotel in Hawkshead and had a good time. As you are going out of season and it shouldn't be too busy I suggest you stay in one of the bigger towns (which we had avoided to skip crowds). if it's only a weekend I would pick a hotel which is near the walking you want to do and as its Jan/Feb you should probably pick a low level/weather safe walk.
Coniston is great ,quieter than and close to, Ambleside.
I would avoid it on the weekend of the 7/8 feb though ,as there are some unruly West Cumbrian loons taking the village over... ๐ ๐
Keswick is also great btw .
I generally stay at http://www.easedaleambleside.co.uk/ really nice B&B.
I use YHA not just because there cheap but they also tend to be in the best locations.
Boot in Eskdale. 3 pubs with accom, two campsites one with camping pods.
ambleside youth hostel great location ,
Not stayed there but there's a nice looking B&B in Buttermere with reasonable prices - met the owner and he seemed a decent chap.

Go and see Taylor and Carolyn.
Independent hostel, far nicer than YHA, perfect location and fabulous scenery.
Failing that the Elterwater hostel has now also been bought out from the YHA (whom I don't have many nice things to say about)

Ambleside YHA seconded.
Ambleside YHA attracts the stag hen party crowd I felt a bit like an alien when I stayed there as I was doing outdoor stuff beer was crap to. Elterwater hostel is good no longer YHA and in a great setting with loads of rides nearby and the Brittiania Inn Not a big fan of YHA as they will not pay their staff the living wage an insist on zero hour contracts for their staff!

Before anybody else does it, I'm not looking for a hostel of any kind. It's a treat for the other half and I don't think she'd be too impressed with a hostel, even if we are on a budget.
Didn't know that about YHA last one I stayed in was Glenridding which is on the way up Helvellyn, didn't eat there though had dinner and beer at he travellers rest down the road.
Edit same time post, no I wouldnt take anyone not happy to rough it to a hostel.

Stayed here last April. Very nice.
Good for walking at Claife Heights - low level stuff not far from Hawkshead.
Fantastic pub nearby next to Beatrix Potter's gaff selling Loweswater Gold..mmmmmmm.

Also stayed here... http://www.walkerground.co.uk/tour/front_bedroom.html
Stay in the 4 poster room.
Hawkshead itself is a bit dull and soul-less though.
http://www.eaglechildinn.co.uk/ Good food beer close to kendal train service to windermere good walking and wheeelbase 300 yds away

Any good ?
Keswick area, the Sun at wythop, bassenthwaite and lyzzick hall are both good. Cottage in the wood at whinlatter does great food and has rooms too.
You could try Yew Tree farm just outside Coniston, think they concentrate on the B&B side of things now, but they used to do good cakes.
Another option is Water Yeat Country Guest house (if it's still run as one). It's a lovely spot, my mums family ran the farm there back in the day.
You won't got wrong with either of these B&B's, they'll be far better value than most hotels-
Grasmere- http://www.raiseviewhouse.co.uk/
Keswick- http://www.honisterhouse.co.uk/
A sort of cross between a B&B & a Hotel- http://easedalehouse.com/
Or for a Hotel-
Kirkby Lonsdale- http://www.sun-inn.info/
ToD has also listed some nice places but they're a bit more spendy..
If you want to push the boat out-

You're best posting a rough budget..
My friend Tim and his wife run a b&b near grange

For a B&B well away from any towns or villages, with spectacular views out of every window, at the foot of the tallest mountain in England try http://www.burnthwaite.co.uk/ at Wasdale head, 2 steps to the pub too.
Black Bull, Coniston - had a great weekend last Sept for our anniversary. Stayed at the Crown too which wasn't as nice. The Royal Oak in Braithwaite is good, two very good stays there with the chaps biking.
Drunken Duck is a good fancy pub / inn between Ambleside and Hawkshead. They brew very nice beer and its a great location for exploring.
Cuckoo Brow hotel in Far Sawrey is very nice.
Storrs Hall on Windermere if you want the full portion of treating!
The beer monster in me sasys stay at the Watermill in Ings...
Swan at Newby Bridge is good if the Mrs wants pampering. Is that a cash register I can hear going kerching?
Great help everybody, I'll need a spare evening to check all these out.
EDIT: I meant to list the Edwardene as like a cross between a hotel/BB-

NOT Easedale House!
(Too late change)
