Last year I found a really interesting site which had photos of remote areas posted by travellers linked to a map and grid/lat.long reference.
I'm not sure if it was worldwide because I was looking at routes in Scotland . I of course bookmarked it but of course now I want it again it has disappeared. No amount of inexpert googling seems to find it despite using the same terms as found it before. Anybody got any ideas, this is driving me crazy!

Even more googling finally found it, geograph.org.uk which aims to have a photo for every grid square in the ordnance survey, very useful if doing trips in remote areas you haven't been before.
