[#7447611]

Hi, the 6+ month winter has decended on N Wales and id like a pair of waterproof trousers for days out walking in the hills. Does any anyone have any recommendations?

It seems Sports Direct have some eVent Karrimor trousers and i can sometimes get a deal on Mountain Equipment stuff.

Any thoughts?

Paramo cascada trousers for me are the ultimate walking water proof trousers.

+1 for Berghaus Deluge. Zip right the way up, breathable and cheap to replace when you catch them on barbed wire...

I shall check the Deluge right now!

My Deluges nearly killed me when I put a front point through the zip coming down Stob Ban north ridge and pitched me over forwards...

There may have been some operator error involved.

I've got a pair of Berghaus Deluge over trousers that I take walking with me.
I've had them a few years but never had to use them as I always seem to be very lucky with the weather.
Usually walk in a pair of Keela Scuffers that are water resistant and cope with showers well.

don't bother with the SportsDirect Karrimor jobs. I got some last year for the commute, have only used them a couple of dozen times and the seam over the right knee is leaking already. Not massively impressed...

I very rarely use waterproof trousers walking in the hills, has to be really cold before I bother as I don't really mind my legs / trousers getting wet and I'm mostly in shorts. Synthetic walking trousers absorb so little water that I just let them get wet.

Having said that I have two sets: a super lightweight Berghaus coated Pertex pair which I often carry but never use and a set of Arcteryx GoreTex Salopettes which I wear for winter mountaineering i.e. standing around in belays knee deep in snow in sub zero temps.

Another cheapo Beghaus deluge owner here - I seem to knacker waterproof trousers quickly ( I spent today kneeling in mud and grit in Forres for example), so cheap and replace. They are waterproof, not very breathable, but I also use softshell trousers, so only put them on in proper rain or cold.

I have a pair of Arcteryx. Yes they were expensive but they are nicely cut, quite slim but with shaped articulated knees. Very comfortable.

If you can figure out/get lucky with the right sizing, RAF goretex overtrousers do the job well and are a bargain

I'd suggest having a look at Fajllraven clothing, plus a bar of wax. Expensive, but as with most things, you get what you pay for.

Arcteryx beta sl, got them in an Amazon deal.

Half the weight, better cut and far more breathable than the deluges they were bought to replace. That said I barely wore the deluges either and if you want a pair of 32" waist deluges cheap then email me.

Trouble is, if you don't wear ovies when it's tipping down, your boots will fill with water and your feet will get wet/soft and so on. The water runs down your legs/wicks down yer troos even when wearing gaiters.

Deluge are as good as any.

Paramo will keep you drier than over trousers eveytime - not necessarily as comfortable - good fit is imperative with Paramo they can feel restrictive ..

Yup. fetching blue, so you don't have to go amry green or camo for your ex service goretex.

The right size for me doesn't slip on over boots, though, even with the shin zip undone. Your boots may vary.

Another Berghaus deluge user here, good for the price.

If the weather is really crap then they guys at Glenmore Lodge were recommending starting out in long johns with waterproof trousers straight over the top, then just keep them on all day. Stops all that nightmare of getting cold, while faffing around trying to put them on, on a windy hillside.

Only if you tuck your trousers into your socks!

Operator error such as walking cross legged?? Isn't the zip on overtrousers normally on the outside of the leg? ๐Ÿ˜€

My gaiters bear the scars of many a front pointing so I can't talk... ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Oh, and sadly I can attest that no, the water will get in there even with trousers over boots and under gaiters ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

Fine for one day walks but if I'm out for overnighters I like to keep everything as dry as possible for as long as possible.

Heavy full length zipped 'Sprayways' from Nevissport for me, pretty thick material so have survived a few bum slides. I'm sure they'll be in action this weekend as I go storm watching in Glen Etive and Glen Kinglas 8)

Another +1 for RAF goretex over trousers. Sizing is a bit of a nightmare, but they're cheap and good quality. They don't go on over my big boots, but I put a cut up the flared bit under the shin zip and now they go on no worries.
