Okay watchies, a bit of a challenge for you. I have a significant, allegedly, birthday at the end of the month and although I'm being asked what I would like have no real idea. I am partial to Seiko's though, specifically manual/automatic ones. One of the things I like is that there are approximately fifteen bajillion different models, so you can find fairly funky/unusual/interesting ones.

So, with that in mind, what can you suggest/find that meets these criteria:

- Seiko
- Preferably automatic, manual is okay though
- Vintage/retro
- 'Different'. I know this is not exactly specific, but I like a bit of colour, or a funky function
- up to £500, maybe a gnat's over of I really love it

Fill your boots.

@IHN - look at the Seiko Presage cocktail time collection. The faces are stunning at their price point - they look like retro dress watches too

I've got an Irish Coffee one and it's lovely

this one looks good

Or, you can’t beat an Orange Seiko, although don’t get this one re my post above:

IMG_5243

Some of you might be thinking “but haven’t I seen that before?  Well yes, I had and then sold the 5kx GMT cause although I liked the look for holiday, the  friction bezel wasn’t working with my OCD.

But, I need an orange Seiko in my life and this won’t get my arm hacked off and looks good enough at the all inclusive Buffett….

Hmm, there are some nice ones there. Being picky though I think I'd prefer 'actually' retro, than 'looks' retro

IHN you can go on chrono24 and do a search by year to get an indication of something you’d like, maybe a Pogue or Bellmatic….

This should be a search for you birth year: https://www.chrono24.co.uk/search/index.htm?currencyId=GBP&dosearch=true&manufacturerIds=226&maxAgeInDays=0&models=2945&pageSize=60&redirectToSearchIndex=true&resultview=block&sortorder=0&year=1974

My n+1 Chris Ward Dune C65 arrived today. Very nice. Hard to photograph because every angle or light it looks very different. Very Charismatic. Here it is with a couple of other mechanical regular wearers:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/cojacal/53586095680/in/datetaken/

I asked about winders, and a bit suprised no positive responses. I've ordered a winder too if anyone is interested will post my thoughts! FWIW my GMT II in the pic is 1998, daily wearer for at least a decade and I have some older vintage watches ... wound to max every day probably not ideal, but I'm 56 and I'm not going to outlive these watches no matter how I wind them!

Not a fan of the Rolex myself - love the CW though, and the San Martin BB(58?) homage looks nice on that strap.

The GMT II wouldn't be my choice either, I inherited it and the connection with my father is such that I will never sell it, and I do enjoy it. What I find really mad is the economics of the thing - if you can afford the initial outlay these things are cheap as chips. That watch cost £1960 in 1998, and has been serviced twice since by Rolex at £500 each time. The first time at about eight years when I just thought it was due a service. Second time something broke, second hand oscillated backwards .. but still £500 Rolex service came back like new. Total cost thus £2960 over 26 years. That is £113 a year. When you consider what Garmin Fennix cost, that last typically three to five years,  this is mental. But here is the real gotcha ... the Rolex 16710 is now valued and insured for £10500. Rolexes, cheap as chips .. who knew!

The San Martin cost me new £258. Finish wise it is just as lovely, really beatifully made, came with another Nato and a beatiful Rolex style bracelet of the same quality that I likely won't ever use. Tudor design cues obviously which might not sit well with everyone. This one has chinese PT5000 clone of the ETA 2824 movement. For a couple of hundred more I could have ordered it with the same Sellita 2824 clone that is in the CW dune, or it would have been  less expensive with a seiko NH34 movement. The PT5000 £258 San Martin keeps time slightly better, but in the same ballpark, as the chronometer spec Rolex. If it doesn't fail for another year annual purchase cost will be cheaper than the Rolex, but no appreciation obvs. YMMV!

@Kryton good choice on watch number 6. If you feel brave enough to modify it a little bit I recommend the MM300 hands I fitted to mine...

Sorry if I my bezel position triggers your OCD , but the palm trees are a clue that I wasn't in my normal timezone 🙂

At what point did "my" Elliot Brown Canford become my "new" EB Canford?

I stopped wearing it a while ago so thought I'd mix things up with a few new EB straps.

Nothing unusual there, but when I received the straps they didn't actually fit so I sent the watch and one of the offending straps off and they returned it fitting perfectly - in a new style case. Which was nice.

Anyway, I still didn't wear it much, the white hands on silver dial weren't as contrasty as my current tastes demand so off it went again...

It's now got a black dial and chapter ring for max contrast and the white on black looks great, the 3/6/9 markers gives it a touch of being a better executed Explorer.

And just now I've realised the hands are different, the lume is much blue-er than it was and lasts longer to boot.

So, given I've got a new case, dial, hands and strap (battery) is this the most trigger's broom watch on the forum?

Yes, we need pics of the EB

I don’t want to to spend any more money on it TBH, it is literally a summer beater for me and sits on that side of the Watch box.  Actually my 14th watch if you count a Fenix.  I’ve two to sell (Geckota and Citizen AT Eco drive), six collector / daily’s (SMP, Aquaracer, C65 Compressor, Arnie, King Samuarai and Presage Cocktail time), then the 5kx & Baltany as shed/pool watches.   I’ve 2 G’s, a 5610u and 6900.

I only really wanted to remain with the six and a G, but I baby/look after watches so the six are a core valued collection of which the King Sam and Presage may be exchange for others quality and rarity over time, the 2 G’s, Baltany and 5kx I’d not be upset to scratch.

My first foray into modding.  Two schoolboy errors - bought wrong sized bezel insert and "trimmed" the stem too far. Now impatiently awaiting replacements.

My Seiko kinetic is 15 years old and on its second capacitor after 11 years.

It's never run down in all that time. It might need worn for a week every so often as in every 6 months.

I just let my mechanical and auto watches run down and reset them. It's a slight joy 😃. None of mine need more than time and date.

No watch winder for me

@pk13 - yes, it's even more defined in real life, it has a much starker contrast between the black and white than that image suggests - the dial is actually black black not the sort of charcoal colour it seems to have come out.

It’s funny, the G-Shock CasiOak is still on my wrist, and I’m not feeling any desire to swap it for any of my mechanicals. I guess it’s because it’s so light, and with the faux Alpine strap, which is very soft and comfortable, I barely notice I’m wearing it. Having a nice clear analogue face helps as well.
There’s another one in the shop with a similar face, but positive rather than negative supplementary digital display, but with a bright yellow case, which I’m feeling oddly attracted to. I’ve got a black alpine strap, which would replace the yellow silicon strap, which I find sweaty and uncomfortable.

Hmmm. 🤔

@countzero there’s a new one coming with BT, solar, Positive display and canvas strap - black an chocolate brown versions for £119, I’ve got my eye on the former but refuse to buy one for the same reason you’ve cited. https://www.casio.com/us/watches/gshock/product.GA-B2100CT-5A/

A few are appearing on eBay but I’m sure they’ll make the UK market.

Always disliked the bracelet on my 1861 Speedy because of the male endlinks.  Couldn’t stomach the price of the 3861 or the bracelet so gave the Uncke Seiko US1479 bracelet a punt.  Very comfortable due to the female endlinks and taper down to 16mm.  Quality is nice too, obviously not Omega quality but then it was only £110 with a milled clasp.  To be fair the friction pins made sizing a lot easier than the tiny Omega screws too.  Has made me love it on a bracelet again!

@diz a watch winder won’t charge up a Seiko Kinetic

i have a winder and never use it.  Came free when I bought a Tudor GMT.  In fact if any of you want it, cover the postage and you can have it

it’s this one but don’t be fooled, no one is going to pay £350 for that

Of course it will, the clue is in the name.

But what you really want for a Kinetic is a wireless induction charger. Seiko did do one but it's long discontinued, so people are using toothbrush chargers instead. Some work and some don't, so DYOR before buying anything.

It absolutely won't.  I've tried, and even Seiko say a regular watch winder won't charge the capacitor on a Kinetic

@kato

Did Seiko say why a winder won't charge a kinetic?

I wear it, the roto spins about, the watch charges. What's different with a winder?

Something along the lines of a watch winder doesn’t provide enough momentum to charge the capacitor.  They are designed for winding a spring and don’t rotate fast enough

i have a kinetic watch.  It won’t take a charge off the winder but will if swing it back and forth with your hand which is obviously a lot stronger movement

My Elliot Brown is back from them

It's definitely had a polish and the grey strap looks suspiciously new. I also suspect it's had the glass polished as it had a fine scratch that you could feel with your finger nail before it went in and it's hardly apparent now.

Came back in a new box too.

Service, battery and pressure test all for £40 and if you have a  blue light card 20% off .

I'm interested in the collective wisdom about Seiko Kinetics (and winders!). My Kinetic was  a daily wearer, and pre-gps sea kayaking navigation tool, for years. Kept amzing time. On my way to work listenting to the today proramme was nerdy to listen to the time signal and realise Seiko Kinetic always bang on. Not even close, just exactly on time, for ever.

Mine was a gift in 1997 from my late wife, a year before we were married, and consequently I'm kind of attached to it. What stopped me wearing it was the surround to the date window detached and jammed the hands, I don't know when maybe 2010 or so. I then didn't do anything with it until 2022 when I opened it up and put  the date window surround back where it should be .. and it all worked, and I posted on here about it, but at that point it became apparen tthat it had no ability to store charge in the capacitor. Then the date window surround fell off again and it went back in the box of watches that don't work!

It is a project I want to fix though. Any comment or advice on Kinetic capacitor change appreciated.

In the interim, I can't imagine why a winder wouldn't charge it. When it was young just picking it up would make it go for days!

I love love the beating heart of mechanical watches, but Seiko Kinetics also amazeballs!

Impending self assessment rebate means it’s NWD!  Picked up a decent deal on a mint 2023 sapphire sandwich.  Temporary strap until I can get the bracelet resized from the comically small wristed previous owner.

Did he give you a valuation or just the offer?  The low offer reflects his ability to sell it.  Either he has 30 the same currently or more likely he knows he specialises elsewhere (sports rolex) and so only attracts customers for those watches.

Wf offers are decent if they don't have a glut of similar watches.  They may drop the offer once they inspect it but yours seems in excellent condition so I'd hope not.

Just had an email from Helm - apparently I'm getting to the top of the waiting list and an offer of a titanium Khuraburi is coming in the next couple of days.
I'm pretty sure it's at least 3 years since I put my name down for one of these, now I've about a week to decide whether I still want one!

On the yes side -
It's an original design and I do like its rather "have it!" styling
It's Ti and I've a slot empty for a Ti watch in my "collection"
On the minus side -
I've as many dive style watches as somebody who rarely even goes swimming could possibly need
It's on the large side for my current tastes

Any thoughts?

Well, yes,I see your point.

Although given your tendency to vacillation and history of watch hokey-cokey I'm just not sure you're best placed to make it!
