personally I’d be looking for a secondhand one on eBay to save a few quid,

Or consider the highly rated Orient sapphire & solar version.....

@Kryton57 thanks for the link for that NATO strap, got one on the way for a new watch.

Has anyone got a steer on good quality 25mm straps? Preferably leather, uniform thickness, not tapered.

Sorry, that Orient is a 'yuk' from me. Too fussy for my tastes. 👍

That new Seiko 5 is very handsome.

Not sure about the "pentagonal" GMT hand though.

Not my cup of tea. Dive watch or chronograph, make your mind up! And hollow end links are a bit cheese-paring on a £300 quartz.

what is everyone’s grail watch ?

I'm always torn between two:

Nixon x Metallica 51-30 'Master of Puppets'

na12463105-00_2

Or the Nixon x Metallica 51-30 Tide 'Sanitarium'

what is everyone’s grail watch ?
I don’t really have one, I have a bit of a mental note of things I like the look of, and if I can afford it, I buy it. I’m currently Panerai curious and a PAM00112 is calling…

Don’t really have one anymore. I always wanted a Rolex when I was young and got one at an important time of my life and I value it above all my other watches even if it is not the most expensive watch I’ve got. It has sentimental value to me and I’ve had it +30 years now so I find I have to force myself to wear one of my other watches I’m so attached to it. Realistically I could never buy another watch and be happy enough (obviously I won’t do that!).

I'd like a white dial, 38mm Omega Aquaterra, but they're nearly 6 grand now! I'll maybe look for a second hand one in a few years.

I should have added a caviar to mine that Kato reminded me of…. That I still have much history and watched to learn about, so my “grail” is very much subject to change.

I've mucked up, that's not an uncommon skx171 but a variant of a 7002 (7020) I'd never seen/heard of. I should have asked for a caseback picture (or dial code).

Which explains why the horologer cannot get parts anymore.

I've mailed Sven with a lot more details and ways to get it fixed, depending on sentimentality (cost).

Sorry, I thought I was helping.

No worries, @Saccades, I should have mentioned that number on the back of the watch.

You were, I never learned that much about watches before. I won't get into modding, but feel a little more knowledgeable... Thanks again for your help.

Ebay saved search weirdness.

Got myself a Hamtun Kraken a few years ago and been keeping an eye out for another. They appear rarely on the bay. So, saved search of 'Hamtun watch' added to help feed the 'Watch' List

Today results = 6,300 for my saved search, 2k if UK-only filter added, 23k if I type in the same for a new search

The second watch in the list is actually a Hamtun, a nice Nanok field watch with a Selita , can't see any others

Search for 'Hamtun automatic' = 1, the Hamtun Nanok

All my other save searches work as expected. What gives?

Can't help on the eBay bit

https://www.almagrovejewellers.com/watches-c1/hamtun-kraken-h2-black-h2s065-watch-boxed-with-one-year-warranty-p4017

If you have one, why are you after another?

@tall_martin

Thanks for the link, tempting......

Why another? N+1! where the +1 is not exactly the same.

I have an H2 in blue, NH35. Fancy the H3 GMT with the Sellita

@richpips - that Seiko Sarg011 is interesting, very similar face and hands to my SP043RK, a sort of field watch design and completely new to me. Not something I would buy, unless I was after a sort of dress watch, but very good looking.

Affordable, it would be the MM300 I was talking about earlier. With the benefit of a serious lottery win, then the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultradeep Titanium, just because the prototypes went to the very bottom of Challenger Deep, and one spent five days on the bottom without harm, and the titanium model doesn’t have springbars so nothing to break.

@Fudd - I’m thinking that my SP043RK could probably do with a service; I’ve had it at least twelve years, now, and it was NOS when I bought it. Having said that, it’s a 4r15 movement, so there’s a case to be made for just replacing it with a more updated model, which is hackable. I’ve also got a new crystal which I’d like fitted, the original is quite scratched now, so what do you think?

I've swapped the original bracelet for a non-OEM leather strap with deployment clasp.

I think it looks lovely:

£60 from Luxury Watch Straps.

@sven too kind, please tell me the cost of the nh36.

@countzero

That "cheap" Seiko movement is one of the few I'd be tempted to get actually serviced, or put to one side & keep as it's relatively rare.

I had a look at the last night, what a thing and is Inassumed for the image above it was a smart watch. And wound by turning the caseback. I’d love to see a Wris****chrevival / Fudd disassembly of that to see how it works mechanically.

Edit: https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/in-depth-the-ressence-type-3

Wow.

unfortunately not mine, was posting a photo for futonrivercrossing as that was their grail watch. I did get a win on the Euromillions this week, but the £2.90 I got doesn’t go very far!

It’s a truly incredible piece of watchmaking, and modern too. To me Ressence are way ahead of brands like Omega/Rolex/Patek who are endlessly releasing remakes of their past glories.

The type 3 is a lottery win buy 🙁

I’d settle for the Type 8 which is considerably cheaper (though still Very expensive) - but still way over what I’d be comfortable paying for a watch .

Fair enough. I like any watch design with innovative technology so well done ressence. However the looks are imv,...... a bit peculiar.

That was my thinking, fit an up-to-date version with hacking, and have the 4r15 serviced and keep it safely tucked away.
I love the watch, I wear it most of the time, and it’s heft is somehow comforting - with the bracelet fitted it’s a pretty solid watch.

Together at last!

Mrs. S bought me a rather nice watch box for Christmas. Far more practical than individual boxes all over the place.
