[#10009059]

At the pub last night I was surprised to find I was the odd one out because I don't wash my legs every time I have a shower.

So what's more popular for the good people of STW, wash legs every time, most times or only when they need it post ride?

Out of interest, given that you are already in the shower and that (presumably) your legs are wet, why would you not wash them?

This might be a dumb question but what do you do in the shower if it's not washing all your body???

I find it stranger you have a pub with showers.

Were these showers mixed, and did you whip anyone with a towel on your way out? Swish. Thwack. Ow!

Unless they're muddy from a ride, I assume my legs will self-clean in the shower what with all the soap and water running down over them.

Crikey, looks like me and ajantom might be in the minority here then!

The smelly bits get washed every time but limbs are secondary and only get a proper wash maybe 1 out of every 4 showers. Genuinely doesn't feel like they need it every time. I always considered myself pretty well groomed but now I'm starting to doubt it!

This pub conversation was a tangent from one of Richard Herring's emergency questions for any RHLSTP fans out there!

It's a fact that men T-shower

Cross of the T goes from pit to pit, the stem goes - well, to the stem and surrounding areas.

As long as these get a proper wash, the water takes care of the rest.

(I'm now curious Rachel if this is something that comes naturally or has to be learned. Hope that's not a rude question, do women get specific training in these matters?)

Image result for how men shower how women shower

Yes, of course if legs are muddy I wash them. In the bath.

Does wash imply soaping or merely pointing the shower head at?

I am totally confused now - you’re in a shower, why would you *not* wash everywhere???

its not like it’s difficult - some shower gel on a sponge or pouf and just wash stuff.

There was an article in The Sunday Times about 8 years ago about cleanliness. The gist was that you need to wash head, arm pits, nether regions and hands; the rest isn't important on a daily basis. Obviously if you're very dirty from sport or work then wash thoroughly.

The article went on to say that like many aspects of modern life, the obsession with image and perceived social norms could in the long term lead to health issues as our natural oils, resistance to bugs etc was slowly being eroded.

My mate is a GP and said that the article was well researched and probably correct.

Having said what I did earlier ..I will admit to the fact that the bottom of my feet don't get washed everytime ..purely on the basis of balancing on one leg in a slippery environment ..thats saved for when I have a bath .

Perhaps the OP has wooden legs and removes them before going in the shower.

After reading the car detailing thread, I now adopt a more thorough approach.

My wife rinses me down in the yard using the powerwasher to get the worst of the grit off. Then into a shower using a pH balanced soap (NEVER washing up liquid because it strips all the essential oils). I always soap down starting from head to foot to avoid transferring grit to my eyes. Rinse. Then out and just shake the worst of the droplets off (never rub with a harsh towel). Then into steam room to open the pores. Then into powershower set on cold for a proper scrub.  Then pat myself dry with a microfibre cloth before working on the undernail area with a splinter free wooden toothpick. Finally rub a good quality moisturiser all over then the gentlest of misting with cologne.

i’ve got rampant dermatitis but I’m clean as a whistle.

In the summer when my head’s shaved, I add another step before the final cologne spritz down. MrsT works on the head with a modified random orbital sander and a drop of Oil of Ulay.

I'm with Rachel on this. I'm in the shower, I'm getting all of me wet and I have a scrunchy thing with shower gel on it. Why not do it all? (even the soles of my feet).

Yep I'm in the t zone group, just like that picture up there. Everything else, unless caked in filth, will take care of itself.

As illustration above, but with inclusion of feet!

Saves time. No need to wash all over every day.

I am totally confused now – you’re in a shower, why would you *not* wash everywhere???

I live in a house with a wife and 2 teenage daughters.

The reasons are manifold, but the top 2 are.....

1/ because there's no hot water left, hence showering has to be concluded as quickly as possible. Hence the T-shower, I can be in and out in under a minute.

2/ because I can't shower before them, for fear of using up the hot water, if we're ever going anywhere I then broadly become the rate determining step for going out. So even if there is hot water, the time allowed for my shower is actually about minus 10 minutes, vis-a-vis I'm getting into the shower about ten minutes after the time we need to leave. While the temptation to lather up and enjoy may be there, the T-shower avoids me getting earache for the rest of the day, and then when my 1 minute shower and throw clothes on while still wet enables me to still be ready before clothing / shoes / make up has been completed, I get the moral high ground of standing by the front door shivering while the clock ticks by.

That said, even if I had all morning for the shower.....

I have a scrunchy thing with shower gel on it.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhaha

You try admitting THAT in the pub!

I don't often go in pubs as I don't drink beer so it's not much of a worry.

surely it would be easier to remove them when you’re in the shower. That would also make them easier to clean as they’d be right in front of you.

Sorry - how much longer does it take to wash your legs given tat you are already undressed, standing under a flow of clean water and have some sort of soap to hand? Seconds.

Other than being a culture vessel for all sorts of germs, what exactly is the purpose of a scrunchy thing?

Probably if you did a quick search online you could find some videos of people showering. Might as well learn it from a pro.

Exfoliation. Plus, the way they lather up means I can use less shower gel and still get a thorough clean.

You wouldn't try washing the car without a sponge.

I can fully shower in under 2 mins so it's just a case of getting in with it.

And remember to wash your feet - especially if one of the manky bastards off here that pee in the shower was using it before you.

My mate, who is also a GP, only brushes his teeth once a day (before bed) and sniffs his work shirts to see if he needs a clean one.

👍

I would be surprised by this thread if I didn’t remember the one from a few years ago about people (families) p-ing in the shower.

i wonder if these are the same people who don’t wash their legs?

I can see where  you're all going wrong here........

Shower gel - wrong.

Scrunchy thing - wronger.

Sing. Grab soap. Apply soap to exposed skin.  Apply shampoo/conditioner,  brush teeth and nails, stand under shower until soap/conditioner/toothpaste has been washed off.   Stop singing.

You can probably get an Archers and lemonade or a white wine spritzer to go with your scrunchy shower mitt.

Don't you lot sweat when you go cycling!!!!!

Sweaty arms, legs on dusty trails means a proper scrub down all over in the shower.

Dirty buggers

Getting them wet isn’t the same as washing them (see pulp fiction for more details)

I'm with the wash everything, every time crowd. I love a good shower though, one of life's simple pleasures.

I think that an every day shower is a very different thing to a post activity, esp sweaty dirty activity, shower. I actually thought that I was very thorough, until I started using a white towel. Seems I miss quite a few bits, which only show up after a very muddy ride... quite the eye opener tbh.
