Hi,
The fob for my 04 VW golf stopped working when trying to unlock the car but works fine when locking. I changed to the spare key and now the same has happened.
Can I fix this without taking it to the garage?
Try this:
Switch ignition on.
Insert other key into drivers door lock.
Lock vehicle manually.
Press lock or unlock button
Wait at least 1 second
Press lock or unlock button again
Horn will sound.
Key should now work.
If that fails you need to access the system with diagnostic equipment.

I had this problem last month, turned out all I needed was a new battery in the fob.
Yep. As above. I've had this too a couple of times on two VAG motors. Don't ask me why, but when the battery is low it loses it's ability to unlock before the locking or boot popping functions. Bizarre!!
Thanks Marko - that worked on one of them which is good enough for me.
