Hmm, this is an ar5e!
Trojan appeared last night and AVG has been unable to heal most of its offspring, with most ending up in the vault. Have followed various AV forum ideas including downloading DDS and GMER rootkit (with a view to sending logs to their forum).
But GMER kept freezing when during scan (even with AV turned off) and now the PC only boots to a black screen with cursor (not DOS). Even safe mode does the same. Either way, I can't get to the desktop, hence can't run any apps or access any files. Can only run firefox to use search engines - can't load normal pages (perhaps the trojan is causing this).
Don't have original Vista disks so can't do a repair that way. Used Snagit to record list of all AV names but unfortunately I can't open the files therefore I can't remember their exact names.
Also have FFE.EXE running in task manager - seems possible this is an infection, but Google also says it's a normal exe.
So, is there any way to launch the desktop from black screen/task manager?
And how can I grab files to do a backup (safe to USB card?) before doing a format if need be?
