Vertical bike storage in a shed

[#13536008]

Our old shed is gone, and a new one is incoming. Probably something like this in 4m x 2.4m flavour.

Now, I want to store bikes in the most efficient way possible.

Currently one big MTB (Bird Aether 9 so it's quite long), one old 26 hardtail, medium gravel bike, BMX and a 24" kids MTB. We'll likely be adding another kids MTB soon.

Has anyone tried vertical storage like the stuff from Gearhooks? It looks like it might work okay but I dunno if it might end up being a massive pain getting bikes in and out in the limited space.

Up until now we've just had them leant up against the walls with a gap in between, which kind of works but isn't ideal.

I am just using the ones from rak bike -

you mount the channel to the ceiling and then you are good. I have 4 bikes mounted and they slide around as you need them

I've done something similar to Big daddy, with hooks on backing board mounted to shed struts. Mine is a pent so a high side for the 29ers, and hooks at an angle to make a bit more height, and get wide handlebars out of each others way, and hanging 26s upside down. 20260621_143143.jpg20260621_143151.jpg

Nothing fancy here. A wooden batten screwed onto the wall then cheapo hooks screwed into that.

I used the gear hook system. It was super simple and easy to install.

Put in three racks with 3 hooks on each. Being able to move the height a bit was useful to stop bars and pedals interfering. Also adjusting the horizontal position to give a bit more room for the two MTB. Worth it. Less drilling than doing everything individually.

The previous home owner left a few of those hooks big daddy posted. Not got round to selling them yet.

Same hooks as bigdaddy, £1.50 each from planetx at the time made a big difference for space for less than a pint.

You got space for another metre width and half metre length? That would also help make it a bit easier to get into and at the bikes.

Not really a useful suggestion on how to store but I'm definitely going longer and wider when the summer house finally dies...not related to bikes but definitely need more space.

I've got 4 bikes with various vintages of Shimano hydraulic brakes from old SLX to M8000 and all suffer the front brake lever issues when hung up this way. Any ideas?

None of my bikes have brake issues. A mix of Shimano BR8000 and some equivalent Shimano road brakes. I can only suggest a "better" bleed.

As above, I've got a mixture of Deore, XT and Ultegra disc brakes bikes hanging vertically and no issue with soft brakes.

I hang MTBs by front wheel and road bikes by back wheel in MTB>Road>MTB>Gravel for space optimization purposes and road bikes don't interfere with (wide) MTB bars...

Currently have cheapo hooks option, with bikes alternating up/down and I set the hooks level which isn't ideal so heed advice mentioned above.  I've got some hinged hooks like bigdaddy's which I need to get around to fitting so that I can rotate them as required to make more space to get 1 in removed link  The sliding rails look really good but can't justify the additional cost....

I've been hanging bikes from front and o/ or back wheels for over 20 years and never had any issues with brakes due to the hanging aspect - Magura, Hope, SHimano, Sram all have been fine.

I've recently installed the rak.bike sliding rail as linked above and as a result have several hooks like these going spare if anyone needs any...

Ta very much all, some good thoughts/ideas there.

Sadly there's no space for more space, we only have an ickle garden.

Re the front brake issue - might be worth trying a Marshy bleed, if you haven't already...
