Can anyone recommend a company that does this and won't want £300+ for a mornings use?
Yes, I'm aware they will have a considerable amount of hassle, so it isn't going to cost ten bob, but I still want a good deal.

find a hire co with branches at both ends of the journey. I've done one way hires with Arnold Clark that have only cost me £30 - £40 on top of the regular day rate, I've also switched cars mid journey for no cost.
Depending on how far it is you might find a mini cab co would drive you there for a fixed price,
