I can, I believe, record and/or live pause using a USB device plugged into the back of my LG telly. I've tried it with a memory stick and it didn't work, but I think that's fairly common.
So, I as having a bit of a look on eBay and found this:

Looks like it'll work, not too expensive (£42) but also looks like someone's getting a boggo SSD drive, sticking it in a USB case, calling it a TV recording device and charging a premium
So, if just looking for external SSD drives I see something like this for £15. Will it do?

Watching with interest. Had an Apple time capsule die in a power cut a few years ago so put the hard drive from that in a case. Not really found a use for it yet, but this sounds ideal.

I wouldn't be purchasing either of those eBay items, especially the second one, which is a scam. Google '32TB SSDs' and you'll see this sort of info...
Be extremely cautious of cheap 32TB portable SSDs on sites like eBay or AliExpress—they are almost universally counterfeit scams containing slow, modified Micro SD cards
The first eBay item may or may not work, but it's too expensive. Maybe try a similar product from Amazon which you can return if it doesn't work? I use a Samsung T7 500GB external SSD in my LG TV, but SSD prices have imcreased a fair bit in the last 12 months.
You can use an older style external non-SSD drive (IE a spinning drive) but they can be slightly noisy on occasions.

Surely Amazon is as full of duds as eBay? Plus returns to business sellers on eBay are easy anyway.
Ugreen or Sabrent SATA to USB adapters from Amazon, £10. Pair that with a 256GB / 500GB / 1TB 2.5" SSD, depending on your requirements.
Two things.
1) as others have said, if storage is really cheap, it's probably counterfeit or otherwise sodded. But if it's just to record telly, do you care? (I would, it'd annoy the piss out of me, but YMMV.)
2) I've experienced the same issue, I tried multiple pendrives in an LG telly none of which worked. I tried two USB hard disks, one of which worked (and it was my nice one, irritatingly). I have my doubts that there's a definitive answer here beyond "try it."

Apart from a few obscure freeview channels, you can stream just about everything.
Yeah, I don't record much these days, but pausing live TV is useful and you need an external drive for that.
Just looking on Amazon there are basically no options from a 'known' brand below 1tb and about £70 for spinning discs.

There's probably nothing wrong with the first eBay thing but still seems a bit cheap - I can't find a Kingston 120gb ssd for less than they're selling the package for. They might not even be new and you'd not know.
