Plugged into the laptop, probably a 2008 version, but Windows doesn't like it.
Any advice?

I probably wouldn't bother, my mate recently tried to update his newly bought TomTom and it ****ed the whole thing up, had to go and get it replaced.

Install TomTom Home first.

You need to install TomTom home.

it should appear as a drive when you plug it in, even without TTH
you do have to turn it on, though.

Yes, it was the installation of (I assume) Tomtom home that Windows didn't like. Not approved apparently.
