I wonder what happens if you don't pay your rent, but you're not allowed to leave.Or if you get chucked off your course.

Said it before, I'm glad not to be dealing with it! Heartbreaking for a lot of people. It's not the best time ever to be unemployed mind but at least there's that upside.

Taking my lad to Bristol in about three hours. As long as he gets on with the others in his flat, I think it will be okay. No massive piss ups or parties, but he should still be able to go out for a few drinks.
Doing physics I hope he’ll get some lab time, but doing lectures on line, is it really that bad?
Not coming home at Christmas though, **** that, I’d probably get us an Airbnb in Bristol.
Thanks Konagirl for your reassurance though, it is a bit tense right now, but these kids are still in a great position in life.

No its not, its brilliant.

Its a little slower when large lectures are invited to contribute but you have space to actually take notes, its recorded so you can re watch bits if you get stuck on something. I am finding I am getting more out of them as its focussed.

Ofcourse it may be that it suits different people because i find in person lectures a total loss sometimes.

Thread revival.

Where are we all at?

Eldest_OAB (like all students) is not allowed to return, yet is keen to meet his flatmates and not live back under his parents roof....

Heriot Watt are offering the legal basics - you can quit your contract. No they won't say if in person teaching might return or if they just write off the year like a few universities seem to now be doing.

No they won't refund the uni sports centre annual fee he paid (£250iirc) either.

No there is not halls refund or compromise, just cancellation, so we continue to keep paying the thousands of pounds a halls is, in case he could return with pals.

Meanwhile the company that run the halls, uni staff related etc are apparently Furloughed. Currently the uni have full rent, Furlough income and no wear and tear on halls or facilities.

I am not sure of what can be done, in the middle of such an awful time.

you signed a contract at the beginning of the year to rent the accommodation.

its up to the vendor if they will refund you from kindness or not. (in my daughters case - NOT)

it sucks but that is the joys of signing a contract. They have delivered their end of the bargain (somewhere to live).

I think if the Uni runs and operates the halls they are more lenient and you may get money back. if its 'fresh student living' that operate out of Jersey (or A N other independent halls operator) you are less likely too in our experience!

My son has gone back to halls and is being taught via zoom. Is happy and doing well. Dance course, stuff is scheduled for bubbles to meet in person from next week. Not what we signed up for but getting on with it. Halls are Unipol, he's the only one in his flat of 4 who's back.

Middle kid in London sharing a flat with the owner (flatmate's dad downs it). Geology course. No field work, no lab work. Very despondent and in the process of having quite a big breakdown mentally. Not shaping up well for the rest of the year.

We (RG Uni) aren't charging rent from Jan to 22nd Feb for any of the students that haven't been able to return.
Some of the local non-Uni accommodation providers are also doing similar.

Daughter #1 (2nd year Leeds) didn't go back after xmas but went back this week having done 'exams' here. Private rental so money back

Daughter #2 (1st year Manchester) went back before new year and is having a pretty good time with pretty much all of her flatmates being there also. There is a halls discount available but it wasn't worth her coming home as she's got a job working nights at the local ASDA

Daughter #3 (1st year Leeds) went back after new year but came back after a week as there's a halls discount available and most of her flatmates decided to go home and she didn't want to stay on her own.
She did say that effectively living in 2 rooms was no fun and a locked down Leeds isn't even nice to walk round. She's probably back for a while..... we'll see. Also said that all her flat mates are suffering mentally because of the lockdown 🙁

you signed a contract at the beginning of the year to rent the accommodation.

But if the students can't return, are they providing the service/facilities paid for? I

Which Sepetmber? Lock in any acceptable spot with an unconditional, keep a watching eye on developments with a view to deferring if things aren't very much back to normal by July.

Same here.

Manchester University's "guarantee" of a place in halls for the first year turns out to have some small print. So she's paid for a private hall... no refunds or rebates of any kind.

Eldest is 1st Yr and was straight back in halls at Lancaster early Jan. 4 storey "town house" of 12 so enough space to get along as bubble.

Home broadband can't cope with Mrs and both kids doing study / work at home and he is happy back there with mates.

Washing and food workload at home is halved - discovered youngest son is much more economical to maintain 🙂

C19 and Brexit have killed off various work experience options for the foreseeable so he is better off studying and just picks up his old job at Ribble in the holidays. Maybe have a year out or industry when things are normal.

in Scotland students aren’t allowed to go home…

who's there to stop them? We've had lots of students just move out, I'm certainly not going to physically stopping them. Some of the ones we have staying don't want to be at home they want their "independence and freedom" from their helicopter parents.

Some just do moonlight moves out which is not the best as they then incur debts for unpaid rent etc for themselves and guarantors they have. Students can legally exit tenancies with 28 days notice to quit, it just needs to be done right. Shouting in my face that I'm ripping you off and I deserve to die isn't the correct way for parents to conduct themselves in front of their wee cherubs.

Van Halen, Fresh Student Living is a management company, they don't own their sites they do the building and facilities management. Lots of their stock is owned by pension funds. It's fair to say the pbsa owner operators are far more about to offer discounts than those who are management agents. The sector is really mixed between the two.

5 days after a letter stating 'go now and lose out staying in your flat/with your pals, or stay for rest of term' he gets the 'all teaching is online until end of term' email.

So that's the uni levered an extra 60 days of rent out the students through a nicely coordinated email...

Hmm.
Daughter #3 has been home from Leeds since Jan 6th as they were offered a rent free period (or something) if they went then and didn't return until told they could.
I'm not sure of the money being promised but she thinks it's in the region of £1500.

Daughter #2 us at MMU and was also offered something but she stayed as she's got a job stacking shelves on night shift at Asda.

MMU are offering rebates for those not there ! Problem is the private landlords around any University.

Yep.... She's loving the money - doing 4 night shift this week (it's usually just Friday and Saturday).
I'm very impressed with her attitude.

Unite students have offered us a 50% reduction for February if our daughters not there. As above she's currently doing dance training over zoom, not ideal.
