[#2937593]

Further to Elfi’s subterranean themed thread I’ve just given the bloke who does the underground Manchester walking tours a call.

We can have a group booking for £7 a head. Tour length approx 105 mins.

Looking at a Saturday morning in August/September.

Anybody up for it? If so send me an email (in profile).

I need 15 people to make it viable. No time wasters!

We can compare walking boots and stupidly powerful bike lights.

Was looking at this earlier, also inspired by Elfin.

As long as its not 6th August I'll have 2 places please.

Cheers

Got 12 interested already without really trying!

Send me an e-mail and any dates that you can’t do and I’ll see what Mr. Tunnels has available.

I wouldn't get your hopes up for anything too exciting. A mate went on one (tunnel from Grt Northern iirc) and was wholey underwhelmed with it.

The flurb from the site says...

[i]Bring: Torch and stout footwear.

Children: Sorry, not suitable.

Beware: Uneven surfaces and slippery steps in the tunnels. We’d rather you didn’t slip on the steps, stumble around in the dark or fall into the canal, so it’s essential to wear sensible footwear and bring a torch. NMW will make every effort to ensure safe passage for everyone on the walk but will not be held responsible for any injuries sustained.

This is the Underground Manchester tour, as featured in the Manchester Evening News, Daily Telegraph and on Granada Reports. And why? Because New Manchester Walks has unearthed the best stories about the mysterious world that lies under your feet, deep below the city: the subterranean rivers and canals, the abandoned tube line, the 1950s atomic bunker under Chinatown and the Second World War air-raid shelters.

On the Underground Manchester tour we drop down, down, deeper and down into the biggest of those shelters, built into the long-disused tunnel of the Manchester and Salford Junction Canal, where tens of thousands huddled in safety from the Nazi bombs inside its vast chasmic chambers under the most imposing and imperious brick work you’ll ever see.

We then head off along the tunnels to find the canal’s waters before they find us. Eventually we resurface to a lighter, brighter, finer-smelling world, and follow the route at street level, above where we’ve just been below, until none of us can get any further.

It’s a weird and wild world below and above. You’ll realise why after you’ve been down with us.

There's no limit. If we get more people they will bring more guides.

I've done the Manchester Confidential one, the 'great tunnel' or something similar.

TBH, I'd echo what was said above about getting your hopes up. It's not bad by any means, but ultimately it's a guided tour like any other. A good section of it is overground where you're shown where the tunnel runs from and to, and given a history lesson. Then you go to the tunnel itself and whilst it's pretty cool and quite weird, it's not the "awesome" experience that your preconceptions / the HDR photography might have you believe.

Don't get me wrong, I'd still recommend it, it's pretty fascinating. Just see it for what it is, an abandoned hole in the ground, and you'll not be disappointed. It's worth seven quid, certainly.

Oh, and shop around - there's several tour group operators offering similar tours.

If it's the same one I went on (meeting outside the Library) it was a bit misleading being called an underground tour, was interesting but only got underground towards the end of the tour.

Mrs Gti and I did this one, er, unofficially, many years ago before anybody thought of making money from it. It's amazing what's down there and even more amazing how easy it is to gain entry.

Nope. Had a bit of a family emergency that will be taking up a bit of my time from now on, so it has gone on a back burner.

Feel free to have a look into it yourself 😉
