I guess this is the end for the Republican Party as a single entity?, can only be good news for democrats.
I'd love that to be the case but I fear what happened here. The Tories swivelled towards the right wing loonies to win back the UKIP voters that threatened to split the party. Look where that has got this particular union*.
Some funny rationalizing going on on here regarding the poor police being undermanned and overwhelmed. Questions have to be asked about Police loyalties (like we didn't know already!)

the conundrum as i see it (and i know nothing) is that trump can’t call in the troop against his people without loosing credibility. is some provision in the constitution to deal with this situation and trump can be outlawed? the original conundrum stands. that is when the problems begin.
i also have the feeling that soldiers/what have you, would be on the right of the political spectrum and reluctance to fight for something that they don’t believe in. would they be more loyal to their commanders (who probably have a better grasp on political reality than the rank and file) or would they be loyal to Trump? or would it be split thus forming 2 sides?

The NY Times feed is quoting some former CIA direcotr who says don't call in the military as they'll actually be under Trumps command and god knows what he might decide to do with them!

Apparently CJCS Gen. Milley has turned against Trump - so won't happen.
I would argue that restraint was the right thing to do. Too many potential martyrs who wanted shooting to start and an excuse to torch the place
The staff and elected members are safe, property damage can be fixed, Trump has soured the last dreggs of his tenure.
Of course they shouldn't have got close, the policing of other protests is starkly different, if the protestors were black there would be dead in significant numbers.

nah I don’t see that for two reasons:
1) their oath is to the constitution not the president. And soldier types take that kind of thing seriously.
2) if polls are to be believed, there was a pretty big swing to Biden among military personnel. Apparently they were not keen on Trump undermining generals, belittling McCain, calling dead soldiers “losers” etc.

It's easy to get caught up in the theater of it all, but it was sending a powerful message. Trump is the buffoon who had lots of money behind him and through various acts of constant transgression captured the attention of the public while the real damage was done.
Those who aided, abetted and funded him must demonstrate genuine and lasting contrition. This cannot be allowed to set a precedent.

The McCain thing did a lot of damage to relations in the military, especially those whose parents didn't have the handicap of bone spurs to save them from Vietnam.

Restraint, for sure. I think they've gone too far down that road from what we've seen, the videos of them opening the gates seem pretty crazy.
I think a lot of people are going "You used tear gas and baton charges on BLM, you should do the same here" instead of "It was wrong to do that" and that's pretty sad. Understandable though. But I don't get how they were allowed in.

Yeah, Wolf was trying to tell him to be careful...a lot! I wonder if they’re identifiable as CNN. I know I heard a few anti-CNN taunts earlier, just as the crowd was beginning to enter the Capitol. Hopefully they’re all hungry now and need to get back to their hotels for the buffet. Not sure I’d fancy being a CNN reporter in the middle of that lot after dark.
