Looking at his swing there is no way on gods earth he was ever a genuine 3 handicapper. I use to play alot, and was a reasonable player and know a little about the game. Sub 5 handicappers don't swing a club like that. He makes my swing look like tiger woods', and I never got lower than 6.
He'd be very luck to play off single figures at any club I've played at, unless of course he's cheating. Which he obviously is.

It's not pretty but it's no Charles Barkley. There was an article somewhere by a golf guy that included an analysis of his swing and his game. Iirc he isn't long but he's straight and his swing favours his iron game. I played golf a bit and got reasonably competent. A guy I played with who was very good advised me to try a round with nothing bigger than a 7 iron. Shot my best round ever. Trump is reported as being pretty good at managing his game in the same way.
Plus, you know, cheating. I read somewhere a playing partner had hit the shot of his life - a 3 wood from well over 200 yards out onto the green. When he got to the green his ball was 50 yards off in the rough. Also an opponent hit a fantastic drive, straight and long. Very long. When he got to where his ball should have been, nothing. Trump was on the green putting for 'birdie'. Trump's caddy later said Trump had just decide to take his opponents ball as his own. Your handicap can be anything you want when you play like that.

I assume that many of the people who would play him at golf are more interested in feeding his ego and making whatever private chit-chat goes on during the game than actually beating him, so can make sure that they "have a bad day"!

He doesn't really do matches- when he does, they tend to be celeb/vip things. If he actually competed, then he wouldn't be able to cheat, or just plain invent a score. There's an amazing story about him, and I think Clinton, Don Rumsfeld and maybe a Bush doing a charity game and at the end, he decided he wanted a trophy- so one of his lackeys found a vase of flowers, chucked the flowers out and presented it to him for Bigliest Golfing or something.
Also, the best thing about owning golf courses is that you get to do the first official round ever and therefore declare yourself to have the high score. Or low score, you know what I mean. It doesn't matter if the next dude beats you. It's like making your own strava segment
