The time where I've found it really annoying is when one lorry driver has tried to overtake another when the road widened to gain an overtaking lane.
Pretty much used the entire stretch to do it, and in the process stopped about 30 cars from performing overtakes before the road narrowed to a single lane.
and one other thought for drivers of all vehicles: IT'S NOT A RACE!!!
(unless you're on a bicycle in one of those 'unspoken challenge against that other cyclist' events of course)
Tsk, lorry drivers, eh.
They're as bad as cyclists.
If the is any group of road users that need a good slap, its tin-top drivers!
I pass hundreds of you every day, and the number that are actually paying any attention can be counted on one hand.
Yes it is a job, but we are providing a service.
Everybody in work provides a 'service' to somebody else in that case.
So what makes lorry drivers a special case?
I would especially like to ask that of the lorry driver yesterday who decided to pull out to overtake parked cars on his side of the road even though I was already halfway down the road and there was clearly no way he could get past.
So I stopped and waited for him to decide how he would proceed and he told me I should drive onto the pavement so he could get past.
Ahh, yes, that's sound advice - I should break the law because you couldn't be arsed* to wait for me to clear the parked cars.
*That should read 'you thought you could bully your way past because you were in a bigger vehicle'.
I got into a mexican standoff a couple of years ago; driving down a double-parked road for a good long distance, some halfwit in a van coming the other way (from just after where the parking ended and the road cleared) decides that rather than wait the five seconds it'd take for me to clear all the cars, he'll muscle on through and intimidate me into reversing all the way back down the road again.
After the usual "you reverse six feet versus me reversing 100 yards" gesturing, neither of us budging, I pulled a book out of the glove box and started reading. It only took a paragraph for him to realise that perhaps reversing two car-lengths to let me out would probably be the best option, cos I wasn't going anywhere.
I'm sure its only the minority of truckers who act in such a selfish way. The opp is clearly not having a pop at a slow overtake that speed restricted trucks are capable of. Its the stalemate that arrives when they are alongside completely blocking a dual carridgeway for mile after mile virtually matched in speed with neither driver willing to yeild.
Correct.
1981Milked - The point in the rant is the MINORITY of truck drivers. The majority are professional drivers getting on with their job, and the majority overtake in a reasonable time. But what I am on about is the few who literally take 10 minutes to get by like last night when I came down the M74, it really is out of order and I would guess attract the attention of any plod witnessing such an act??

My hero. *swoon*
Best lorry drive antic I saw was an artic fail to make a clean exit out of a retail park and drag it's trailer over the bonnet and front wing of a car, before driving off, seemingly oblivious to what they had done.
Cocks, all of them.
My hero. *swoon*
Get back under your bridge.
Get her!
Yeh we really enjoy sitting at 56 miles per hour, yes we can go quicker but why should we cos we know it annoys you. The government make the rules not us. Try sitting behind a truck for 2 hours coming on and off the throttle a sure fire way not to get your economical driving bonus. We sit on the limiter, different weights and engines and limiter settings mean we are much the same speed but there are occasions when overtaking is necessary and it can take time. Next time you are out practice what you preach and don't overtake see how long you can go.

Have you tried not driving quite so close? Works for me when following a middle-pedal-happy BMW in the third lane.

I'm not sure the argument is that you can0t overtake is the lack of courtesy to other drivers in the how and when you overtake. I remember following a Kwik Save truck one morning and he took all the overtaking opportunities to overtake other trucks generating a healthy tailback. This was over a 20-30 (iirc) mile stretch of road. I finally got to overtake him and then gave him the chance to see what it felt like to be held up, aparently he didn't like it as he tried to run me off the road on a roundabout.
It's all about sharing the roads and being courteous, no-one has more rights than anyone else, not you, not me.But if you drive like an idiot, don't be surprised if people return the favour. 😉
Just a thought. Maybe all you lorry drivers that obey all the road laws and show common decency towards other motorists by NOT overtaking on dual carriageways should be annoyed at the total bellend colleagues of yours that give you a bad name. And not other road users who you claim to be working for.

As a 'professinal' driver you should be able to hold your foot steady enough to not have to do that.
No cougar, im suggesting the driver hogging the lane should move over and let the faster vehicle(s) pass!
Not exactly the sharpest tool (being the operative word) yourself, making sweeping statements about people's intelligence by the posts on a bike forum!
However i do agree that there a number of halfwits driving HGV's so we can shake on that one.
Sorry for the delay in replying, i stopped to help at an accident caused by...a car driver trying to overtake a lorry on a wet and narrow country road!
Everybody fine tho thankfully and just away to get through. Long day!
So beforehand you were typing and driving then? 👿
Well he didnt answer me when I asked that earlier so in true STW style we can only assume that he was.
Now where has my pitchfork gone?
That's professional driver for you. They're better than us mere mortals and as professionals they can do what they want rather than leading by example. Respect is clearly something which we can demand rather than simply earning.
Fortunately I can't remember the last accident caused by a lorry driver talking on the mobile, falling asleep at the wheel or just driving like a turkey. So I guess they are all perfect, must be nice being perfect.

The way I read it was that he'd pulled (left) back in front of the truck and then slowed down. Either way, point was that if vehicle A runs into the back of vehicle B, it's vehicle A to blame (except in atypical circumstances). Though as subsequently discussed, being "right" will be of little comfort to you in hospital.

Seriously? Good grief. 😯
I expect someone will have already mentioned how difficult it is to keep your speed up in a truck and that by even lifting off slightly can cause a dramatic fall in speed. But hey who cars idiots must get to the next hold up faster and if your faster you are clearly more important.

LOL - I wish I had a book to do the same yesterday - it was certainly how I was feeling as he barrelled up toward me.
lifting off slightly can cause a dramatic fall in speed
So? Point is? They make other people reduce their speed instead because that's okay?
And if they were all limited to the same top speed by GPS there wouldn't be a problem. They are all tracked by GPS so why cant they be limited by it too? I know the tracking system I use shows me the current speed of the vehicle I'm looking at down to 0.1mph. If this were the case there really would be convoys rather than rolling roadblocks.
Miked you havn't had an accident have you? You have gone quiet. Maybe he is on one of his 4 hourly breaks and doesn't post on breaks.
No typing and driving for me! I was parked up waiting for my load then sitting waiting for the road to open.
It is hard being perfect, cnt deny that.
I see far more idiotic driving resulting in crashes from car drivers taking stupid and unnecessary risks..but then im a cock and not very bright so what do i know?
Yes Cougar..seriously. The car overtook me doing way more than the limit!
He met a lorry at the next corner, was going to fast and tried to avoid it, clipped the lorry, hit a wall and spun! The lorry ended up hitting a tree.
The passenger was to he airlifted but fog stopped that.
Perhaps when all company paid for car had the owning companies details on the back along with phone number and email address then LGV`s wopuld be allowed to just deliver, not be seen as a curse to the company car brigade.
Just a thought and not related to the thread.
How can it be hard being perfect? If you were perfect surely it[being perfect], along with everything else, would be easy.
I was parked up waiting for my load
Fnarr fnarr quack

Eeep. Hope everyone's alright. Moral of this story, etc.
Calm down and have a jam sandwich 😉

LORRY driver Dennis Jackers was last night celebrating the first anniversary of starting to overtake fellow trucker Bob Mellows and the creation of a tailback described by the UN as a “crime against humanity”. ...............
Yeah paramedic said serious but not life threatening.
Bigger picture etc.
Love it Redthunder... If 1981miked had paid more attention to my post he would have understood that I too was simply berating the bad driving habits of the few ....not simply have a go at all lorry drivers who by and large are great drivers.OK I'll admit it I can't understand why the farmer needs to drive his s**t covered tractor at 10 mph at 5.30 pm on a very busy dual carriageway leaving a trail of cr*p behind him on the road ....but perhaps he had an urgent field to get to.
I don't really think all lorry drivers are cocks. I was pretending to be an idiot.
As someone who drives 45K per year I have daily interfacing with HGV's and in the main they're a decent bunch, they're only doing what I do and that's provide for their families. There are a few dickhead truck drivers but their is LOADS of dickhead car drivers.
What does piss me off is they are allowed in Lane 3 on 4 lane parts of motorways, lost count of the number of times they're 3 abreast and everyone else has to filter around them to get past, which causes mayhem behind them, BUT, much of the mayhem is caused by ****ers in cars who drive at the same speed or slower and generally hog the middle lane.
It should be illegal for a car to be overtaken by truck whilst clearly not breaking down or entering/exiting a motorway. Many people also don't realise trucks have lower speed limits on certain roads too.
But I'm fed up of having this 'without trucks you get nothing bollocks' rammed down my throat, I'm a salesman and if I don't sell anything there's sweet FA for the trucks to deliver 😆
To be fair, there's no shortage of brain donors on the motorways, irrespective of their choice of vehicle.
The M62 is a haven for the middle lane owners' club, bumper to bumper bimbling along at 60, an empty lane either side of them as far as the eye can see.
The M65 seems to be a hotbed of cars doing about 40 for no immediately apparent reason, though at least they mostly have the grace to use the the first lane. At least the 18 wheelers forced out into the second lane can manage to overtake them in less time than it takes me to grow a beard.
The M6 seems mostly to attract people who can't drive it a straight line for five miles without hitting something.
I_ache OT- roughly when did you sell me your forks?
Cougar middle laners are actually lazy drivers in the main. IMO. Think about it. How easy would it be to stop moving around so much, the one 'hassle free lane'
You are right about the m6 - bang on.
I'm reasonably convinced that middle laners are largely inexperienced / nervous drivers. They're scared to change lanes, so they hole up in lane 2 and sit there. There's also a mentality which believes that the middle lane is the "cruising lane," whatever the hell that means.
Get a motorbike & zip up between the two of them, one hell of a buzz but not to be recommended to the faint hearted - best done on an ageing two stroke so your plate is obscured in a cloud of smoke as you dissapear into the distance to have your heart attack.
