There is a good reason the film of Lemony Snicket died on it's arse.
That is the culprit.
There is a difference between good casting and good acting.
Cumberbatch in Sherlock is good casting, he is a rather irritating self absorbed posh sounding tosspot, very far from being a good actor but spot on for the Sherlock's persona.
Gary Oldman on the other hand has played many great characters over the years, that can be put down to acting ability.
I think films that Tarantino have a hand in get it right,
Uma Thurman has ruined several of his films.

Disagree, I think he made it.
Good one lovewookie, absolutely stole the film...
Tilda Swinton in anything that involves being bonkers
Yeah, but not just bonkers, unsettling and unworldly bonkers. Her angel definitely wasn't people, by the end.
#include <stdio.h>
main()
{
int sum = 12, count = 3;
double mean;
mean = (double) sum / count;
printf("Value of mean : %f\n", mean );
}
colournoise - MemberDefinitely a triumph of casting over acting. Can't think of anyone else with the same perfect (for the role) mix of blankness and slight bemusement.
SImiliarly, Matt Damon in the first Bourne film- always looks totally surprised at what just happened. It's a gift he has.
Keanu Reeves in Pointbreak. Who else could possibly play a stoned, dropout, surfer dude with such gravitas? He makes the doors seem animated.
CBA to sort a photo from my phone- Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast
Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast
Another case of an actor nailing the part rather than great casting.
Disagree. He certainly did nail it but whoever did the casting had to have seen what he could bring to the role.
"What's it got in its pocketses?"
Jeremy Irons as Lord Vetinari

Whoever did the casting got the best actor they could afford who could obviously play the role.
If you get actors like Gary Oldman, Ben Kingsley and Christian Bale, then you are pretty much guaranteed a performance, you would have to miscast them to **** it up.
A couple more
Hugh Grant in Four Weddings
Bill Murray in Groundhog Day
Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino and in the Sergio Leone Man with no name trilogy
@MSP - Meh. Arguing with pedants about trivia on the Internet isn't one of my favourite pastimes so you win, congrats.
Agree about Christian Bale though, his goal against Real was epic!
Stallone in judge dredd....
