[Closed] Transfer of existing car reg to new car. How long?

It came time to change the car, so another purchase made from a local dealer, with my existing car as a trade-in.

My current car has a cherished number on it which I wish to retain and transfer to the new car.

The dealer has offered to handle this and apparently can be done online.

So...

Is this something which can be completed nearly instantaneously?

Pretty quick TBH. Did it ourselves. Fairly instantaneous. Only delay was getting plates - ordered on-line as it was a fraction of Halfords cost.

Wouldn't you just physically transfer the plates from the old car to the new car once the reg transfer had been completed?
