But then I’m just an old, straight, white guy.

The question has to be asked as to why you are not running for US President this November.

When it’s not clear I’ll err on under- rather than over-moderation. Does anyone really want more censorship?

I think I explained that badly. I just mean you (the mods) are actually too accommodating at times. I'd actually be all for a harder line on the antagonisation, willful ignorance and bickering that goes on.

Theres a balance to be struck between right to reply and flogging a dead horse. Between rightful condemnation and mob mentality. Between answering a point and just making stuff up to suit an agenda. Sadly all too often STW fails at all of these and you end up with the utter horror show we have here.

I would have a life ban by now. But then I’m just an old, straight, white guy.

You are far from the victim here.

Grum, I get the picture that I am unwelcome here. Thank you for adding your voice to the many others clarifying me as an outsider both on the forum and in the cycling community.

I was going to say something here but I'm not sure if I'm allowed. It was really funny though. Honest.

I usually just lurk on here but have to say I agree, its like someone describing BikeMagic when it was it its worst. IMO STW has always managed to maintain a high standard with fair and open moderation, sometimes over reacting but thats better than not giving a flying....

That really wasn't what I was trying to say at all. I've valued your input on other threads....

answering Cougar/Faerie - how does Jon feel about it.

I'm Jon, and I spoke openly and candidly about my son's experiences both with the issues of identity cards, etc. and also just the issues with being a young TG person in general.

I posted my thoughts on how this thread was spiralling a couple of pages back but I'll re-paste here as opinion hasn't changed.

......this spat is derailing what was an interesting and informative thread to the point where it should probably now be closed.

It had been informative and I’d like to think a few readers (not necessarily participants) might stop and think on whether their first instincts about the worthiness or otherwise of the story were right. Others may have learned from it, some may have changed their opinions on it, others still may have had their opinions reinforced – whether for good or bad depends on their and your viewpoint.

It’s not an easy subject, spiritually or legally and those that try to present it as a simple choice miss the point. It’s very nuanced. But by talking and explaining I think those that are willing can learn.

I respect both your opinions and variously your support but you both should take a step back now and either let the thread get back on topic, or probably as that time has passed just close it completely. I'm not taking sides and I'm not going to have anyone put a pitchfork in my hands. If I want a pitchfork I'll decide and will bring my own.

Non disclosure of financial details? You'd be a perfect fit.

I don't usually post on non bike topics, but what we've seen on this thread is one of the worst parts of social media.

Reading through this, when it can cause people to feel like shit and unwell it's time to close the thread.

She has mentioned why that might appear so to the rest of us.

I am 100% team Cougar on this.

Perhaps people should stop declaring their allegiance when someone is complaining of mobbing.

I just don't think it's a particularly good look when someone complains that they feel like they are being bullied for a bunch of people to jump in and say, 'I'm against you and here is why you're wrong.'

If you feel like you really want to support Cougar then send him a DM rather than posting on this thread and turning perceived bullying into actual bullying.

And we're now in an impossible position. We're damned either way as whatever we do it'll get twisted.

The thread gets closed. "You've done that to silence me!"
The thread gets reopened. "You've done that to bully me!"

Can't win as what we do. So I'm stepping out of this.

Oh, yeah,

@theotherjonv - sorry, I didn't make the connection last night as to who she was referring to.

What we have here is a failure of communication. And that is not anyone's fault in particular, it is happening because we are talking via text and not in person. This has a dramatic effect on how our posts are interpreted.

Just yesterday I posted what I wanted to be a supportive positive comment on a post from a friend who is of a minority. It very much blew up in my face because it came across the wrong way. All I want to do is be an ally and show support, and yet posting via text to a friend it just didn't work.

I think that is happening here. Faerie is seeing bad things in Cougar's posts, but I honestly do not believe that he is intending them to be there. I think we all need to be aware of this effect and moderate our responses accordingly. And I hate to single anyone out but Faerie needs to do this too. Otherwise you risk making an enemy out of someone who wants to be an ally.

<To everyone> If someone makes mistakes in their comments, do not judge them as 'the problem' and tear into them; help them learn and understand.

And this is where it ends.

I'm shocked by this. I really am.

I've contacted both Faerie and Cougar directly. If any further action happens regarding this thread it will be entirely my decision and will not be attributable to any of our volunteer moderators.

To be clear - I am closing this thread out of concern for the wellbeing of certain users. In no way am I closing down debate. I hope that is very clear.
