145mph down the Creg, Mad Sunday, 1992.
Pillion on my mates Kawa Z750 Turbo.

Then about 115mph in exactly the same place riding a YPVS350 later the same day.

125mph on a 350LC? What did you do, throw it out of a plane? ๐Ÿ˜€

Glencoe to Lincoln in under 4hrs.

Thats an AVERAGE speed of about 90mph!

And almost definitely bullshit. Why? Because:

Saw something like 7 cars in all that time

Is a lie. I know a lot of those roads are motorway, but even in the early hours you'd see hundreds of cars in that 360 mile journey.

Vehicles capable of doing that average speed? Motorbike possibly, but you'd be stopping for fuel at least twice, more like 3-4 times as they drink fuel at speeds like that, and then we're talking super/hyper cars, not some plodding M-Series BMW or similar.
Remember, every time you stop or slow down you've got to double your speed to make the time up.

I know how fast I have to go to do the 50 miles from my mother-in-laws house to ours in under and hour (On a motorbike) and, sorry, but you ain't doing that journey in 4.

To be fair the Stan Stephens tuned LC's were good for about 140 but would go bang very regularly ๐Ÿ˜†

My fastest is on a bike a very worked on EXUP speedo was saying about 180 so most probably about 165ish it was still going but those speeds on roads is very very unsafe.

Had my gixxer 750 tapped out on the A449, didn't look at the speedo, Raglan to Usk seemed to happen in a flash, slowed down when a caravan pulled out about a mile in front and before I had time to really think about it I was on top of it. He was doing about 55 so the closing speed was just ridiculous. No real drama but that has always made me think.

Back in the summer when driving over to Sweden a M3 came past on an autobahn flat chat, I reckon I could see about 2.5 miles of road and it was out of sight in about 20 seconds, unreal to see that on a public road.

120 in an old cavalier sri130. Between Perth and Dundee.
Late for lectures and a fellow student gave us a lift. Was scary tbh (and stupid) but we made the lecture.
Done a lot of silly things in my life but have never ventured much over 110..I have enough metalwork in my legs already so motorbikes are not in the equation..

I'm not sure you know. ๐Ÿ˜€

We all had LC's, and the highly tuned ones were never, ever as fast as they were supposed to be, even when they'd just been fettled by Mr Stephens or Mr Barlow:

By the time they'd been run in, they'd either seized again or the jetting had mysteriously 'gone off' ๐Ÿ™‚

I remember a test in 'Bike' years ago when a fully tuned Stephens' LC managed about 125mph.
They did sound nice though.

What do you reckon the modern day equivalent to an LC is ?
GSXR600? Triumph Daytona?

There isn't a modern equivalent IMO

I remember reading a copy of Bike where the police were chasing a SS LC 350 and reckoned it was going 135 on the Kingston bypass. The front cover was a kid on an LC with a Bandit on and a green flight jacket. He was doing a burnout and the rev counter was just buried ๐Ÿ˜†

Hey maybe we remember different things ๐Ÿ™‚

Thing is with some of these speeds people are quoting did you feel unsafe? The preza had got more in the tank but I felt uneasy, it was 3am so nothing around on a dual carriageway so other cars were not an issue, but things started to feel light and generally a bit wishy woshy!

140mph up the A1 near Sheffield, topping out my Dad's Audi A4 after some chavs in an Escort started racing me. Seriously slowed down after having to use both lanes to get round a corner. Never been even close to as fast as that since. Stupid.

scariest was doing 95mph down the A1 in my Nova 1.4 - downhill with a tailwind. the rattling was deafining and the steering felt so light that I thought the wheels were off the ground. that was easily the most reliable car I have ever had though.
it was 10 years olds when I sold it and I hadn't done a bit of maintenance to it, apart from fitting a bean-can exhaust, and it looked like it had just come out of the showroom.

As fast as a CBR600/VFR750/Fireblade would go (on the road).
As fast as Hayabusa would go (on a disused airstrip). Probably around the 180-190 mark. Didn't feel any faster than 150 tbh but trying to stop was interesting ๐Ÿ˜€

Not been much over 100 in a car. Don't see the point.

49.9mph road bike
62mph mtb (on road)
142 sierra cosworth, early 3 door example (passenger)
160mph zzr 1100 d1 (with a ferrari 355 beside me, he matched me from 80-160, i rolled on the throttle in top)
all indicated speeds, almost definately some speedo error.
no way would i go past 100 now, depend on my licence for work.
the noise from the ferrari still makes my spine tingle.

Maxed out Blackbird so ~185 mph. As above, dint feel much faster than 150mph (when space & time start to bend) and I dint spend much time at that speed. Mainly due to being punched in the kidneys by SWMBO......

as a passenger in the fathers car. 180mph average along the autobahn in a Ford Capri with a Rover V8 tuned by the ex next door neighbour who was a formula 1 tuning technician at the time. Scary fast.

Personally, 120mph. The girlfriend rang me at 0300 saying she was feeling frisky & I was 50 miles away.

145 indicated on the M25.
Saab 9000 2.3T , slightly overboosted by a couple of psi.

It got rather boaty and the steering went very light. Great car for point to point driving on single carriageway A roads. Lines of cars dispatched in seconds. Tricky bit was keeping it in a straight line and slowing down to pull into a gap . Leathal on anything but bone dry roads . Gearbox failed in the end . ๐Ÿ™

Passenger (3 up) in new style Skyline GTR with >700bhp. More than 180mph, tried to Endomondo it but weirdly it just gave me an error. UK roads too.

Did I feel safe?

Mine was in a new (OK, 1500ml old) Boxster S, roof down. Wind noise was pretty bad, but rock stable, and it'd go a lot faster (I'd guess) without things getting scary. Other traffic is what made me slow dow, I ran out of empty road! The odd thing was the lady sitting next to me (who worked for Porche Bristol, a friend hence why i was driving the car) as I drove the nuts off this car was more concerned about the track on the stereo. I asked her afterwards if she was at all concerned by the speed to which she replied, nah, everyone drives like that on a a test!

Fasted average was 70mph, Bath - Southampton leaving at 12:30am, one of those drives where just everything clicks, every car lined up to be overtaken on wide open, straight roads and I felt like a driving god. I still remember I had Global Underground, departures on the CD player. The car? a 1.4 Clio RT. Proud I was!

I can't compete in out and out speed, but I reckon I win in the speed/non-sportiness ratio.

130mph in my 2.0 Passat TDI for reasonable distances, on the Autobahn. Problem is, 130mph is too fast for the middle lane but not fast enough in the outside lane ๐Ÿ˜ฏ it's strange to be going that fast and have some bloke in a Merc come rapidly up behind flashing his lights. It is good though to be on a long journey, being bored and wishing you were home, and being able to floor it. Grew out of it after a couple of months mind.

But for the win, 100mph in a 950cc fiesta MkII. A hill was involved. This was before I knew about tyre speed ratings and the fact my dad used to by remoulds.

as a passenger on the back of a GSXR100 150mph odd, horrible experience. Driving myself, 135mph on the M62

Edit: Molgrips, my 135 was in a 320d, also did 99/100 in a 1.2 punto, come onnnnnn!

The Passat was perfect up to about 110mph, above that it got a bit noisy and by 120 it started to feel just a smidge less secure.

The Fiesta otoh was fine at that speed!

Fastest was probably 88 in my old '81 DeLorean DMC 12. Used to leave these sweet flames down the road.

Gutted to see it go, but sold to a young lad and his grandad. Always wandered what happened to it.

178mph indicated on a demo R1 just north of Rochester on the A68. The R1 was so much faster than my own GSXR750 it was unreal!

92mph on my 1969 Lambretta(genuine, GPS and rev vs gearing calculation, very tuned engine) was far and away more frightening than any speed on the R1. I think 95mph is doable with a bit of fiddling with the jetting!

146 civic TypeR (3 of them) all maxed out on autobahn en route to Mayrhofen.
160 Makinen evo 6 autobahn again to mayrhofen.
at 170 GSXR 1000 I got scared and backed all the way off and had to have a sit down. It had done 130 in 3rd! motorbikes are scary... very scary.

An indicated 155mph in my old MR2 Turbo, so more like a real world 140mph. Still had a fair bit to go on the rev counter but the undertrays decided to make a bid for freedom and scared the bejeesus out of me. I don't think I've topped 100 since, even though my current car is significantly quicker than the MR2. It's just not about the out and out speed anymore.

I took my Berlingo to 100mph (indicated) on an autobahn in Germany yesterday. It was slightly downhill with a following wind. Not bad for a 1.6 75hp fully-loaded-with-kit. ๐Ÿ˜†

163mph in my old derestricted M3 on a private road in the midlands somewhere at about 1am.

202mph as a passenger h in a Ruf R Turbo at Brungtingthorpe on a vmax day about 8 years ago.

What an amazing piece of kit that was - made it seem easy!

165mph. Aprilia RSV1000

I've accidently wheelied at 150mph hitting a dip in the surface. Brown trousers moment.

Flat out in my Leon FR when i'd not had it long just over 140mph, still felt totally solid at that speed.

My brother has a tuned Evo VIII, its good for 180mph, never managed more than 160 in it though, roads disappear really fast at that speed

More than double the motorway speed limit on a tuned ZX636R with a calibrated speedo (on private roads obviously)
